Just Cause 3 - The Sandbox Destruction is Strong

The new wing suit, multiple grapple tethers, and fantastic explosions make Just Cause 3's sandbox as good as ever.

Looks fun, but it will get old fast. Games like this and GTA doesn't have that magic for me anymore. I'll buy it used or when it's on a heavy discount.

Just cause shooting and explosion is amazing, but i dont think the driving is going to be as fluid or great as gta games.

I wonder why they can't make the driving as good as it should be. Because from what i saw from trailers and gameplay videos, it doesn't look right. See for yourself

So just because the sandbox destruction is strong...then what? GS keeps making these annoying articles with incomplete titles.

@haze0986: I don't own a "not all there are you". Does it help with deciphering the title? Where would I go to get one?

And the words "whats" isn't even in the title so it's not the problem here.

Now you've made me more confused though.

This will be an easy purchase. I put so many hours into Just Cause 2. You took too long WB. I was a huge Arkham fan, but now I'll be gliding and grappling in Medici. JC2 ran perfectly on my PC, so I hope the same can be said for JC3.

If GTA V has taught me anything, it's that open world sandbox games aren't nearly as interesting or as fun as they used to be when it was a newer concept. That's not a knock on GTA V, that's more of a genre fatigue thing for me. Same thing for FPS games, most especially military shooters. To each their own though.

@jinzo9988: I think open world should be an RPG game or not , It's nice when the world is full with people you can interact with , secrets and challenges like the witcher 3 . exploring that world is full with surprises and rewards .

@jinzo9988:

What GTAV did not teach you is that Just Cause is nothing like GTA. Just Cause has always allowed total freedom to do whatever you want as creatively as you want. That sets it apart from GTA and ensures that it never gets old because you make your own gameplay.

The best examples of a genre are always excluded from genre fatigue and Just Cause is one of the best examples of the sand box genre. GTA Online is not. It is flawed because it constantly pulls the player out of the world and puts restraints on what you can do, with missions quickly becoming repetitive.

That does not happen with Just Cause. You are never pulled out of the world and placed in lobbies looking at loading screens. Mission structure is completely unrestrained, allowing you to use your creativity. You do not choose missions from a menu list presented on screen like GTA Online, you choose you mission as you see it in inside the world in real time. Big important difference.

The fact that you chose GTAV as an example of sand box gameplay indicates that you do not fully understand the genre, because GTAV is not a genuine sand box game.

I've been waiting for Just Cause 3 ever since I completed Just Cause 2 and it will be awesome. The dev has understood what it did right in Just Cause 2 and expanded those positives in every direction.

@jinzo9988: Play Witcher 3 and be reminded of the exciting nature of open-world games.

Regarding the FPS genre, ya...lost its spark severely now. I remember the first time I laid eyes on Goldeneye 64...

@jinzo9988: You're old. Don't worry. so am I.

I spent hours messing around with traffic in San Andreas. I picked up Just Cause 2 on sale a while back & I just couldn't get into it. GTA V was fun but I mostly stuck to the story & side missions. Testing out the physics of an open world just doesn't have the same appeal anymore.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: Maybe. I am 29, but I'm not sure that has anything to do with it. I watch Youtube videos of people messing around with GTA V like driving on props in the sky or people trying to stop the train with various other vehicles and I just don't get it. I can't believe that's what people occupy their time with in a sandbox game. I might have the idea to stop the train with a vehicle... and then when the train runs right through it, I see myself shrugging my shoulders and saying "Okay, now what?".

I suppose that in short I'm just not a "make your own fun" kind of person.

@jinzo9988: Two different types of games. The reason I like Just Cause is the exact same reason I'm not as much of a fan of GTA as I use to be. GTA is Rockstar saying, "look what we did", which is what it was when GTA3 first released. It's impressive they can make this big world that looks like a real city. There's not much depth to the actual gameplay though.

People call Just Cause shallow, but there's actual depth to that type of over the top, chaotic gameplay. They have a focus and they continue to improve upon those elements. If GTA V was the same way, the actual criminal elements would be deeper by now, but the game is just bigger and prettier. I don't think Rockstar has a true focus outside of world design, although it might be story. The problem is most people don't even care about GTA stories. They just want to do random shit, and that's the stuff I think they should focus on and there wouldn't be as much fatigue with that series.

I agree about most open world games, but the games that have a legitimate focus are in a different category IMO. The Witcher 3 is essentially an open world/s game and it's probably my favorite looking game and that wasn't even CD Projekt Red's main focus. Same thing with MGSV. You can't just win with visuals anymore. It's just not that impressive anymore and that's where the fatigue comes from IMO.

@PS2fweak: All I want is a good campaign mode in that beautiful, huge open world they create. I don't want it to be like Just Cause 2 where there was no real use of the massive map. I can only get silly and 'blow stuff up' so many times to the point where it gets old because this world is so huge, but there's nothing but improvements on a Just Cause 2 tether.

I hope they prove me wrong because although I know they are different games, this world seems like it would be more interesting than GTA easily, like Saints Row 2 was to GTA IV.

@ceaseless: I hated Just Cause 2 at first, because the campaign was so weak. I went back to it after awhile and I loved it for what it was. I played on PC, so the mods did help. I play GTA for the campaign, but afterwords I just don't see much to do. To me, Just Cause is all about gameplay, but you may or may not like that type of gameplay. GTA is more about story and the look and feel of a city. I'm still a big GTA fan, but the lack of the more extreme stuff is a problem IMO. Wingsuits exist in real life and are fun, but R* doesn't add stuff like that. I don't know why they don't add realistic, but still extreme elements to their game so it fits into the world and adds to the gameplay.

R* adds tennis and golf, but I would rather them add surfing, wingsuit gliding, real race tracks, gambling, robbing houses, banks(whenever you want), bring back vigilante missions and other missions based on other professions within the world, and other stuff that actually makes the real world fun/exciting. If you put me in the real world with no real consequences, I would think of too many things to do. I wish they would think like that. I might do yoga or go play golf or tennis this week. Why spend too much time developing elements like that in a game? I get it, you're rich so now you play golf and have a private tennis court. Too much stuff just for the look and feeling. I just care more about doing something fun in a sandbox. Rockstar will even add something more fun/interesting, but then only use it for one mission. This happened multiple times in GTA V.

Basically I believe Avalanche does a better job making Just Cause what it's supposed to be than Rockstar does with GTA. I also wouldn't expect much from the JC3 campaign for that very reason. Just Cause is about doing stunts and causing chaos in creative ways. Anything else is just a bonus.

@PS2fweak: I wanted to see them put a cheating element into golf & tennis. It didn't feel like it was part of a GTA game, it just felt like it was bolted on.

@PS2fweak: I'm not telling you that you're not seeing GTA V for what it is, but I do think a lot of what makes GTA incredible, especially V, goes beyond it's game play. Of course, wingsuits, surfing etc are not unrealistic, and could easily be put into GTA, but you have to consider Rockstar's own stand point and what they're trying to say. It's quite clear that Avalanche want you to have fun with JC, in the most purest sense of the word. I mean look at the video above, you can literally do what you want. JC epitomises what video games have, for many years, been solely about - transporting you into a world in which anything is possible.

And if this is the case with JC then what Rockstar have done with GTA is taken a more mature approach to video games, not in terms of gameplay, but in terms of representation and themes. There aren't many video games who strive to achieve the level of social commentary that GTA V has. The game, in that respect, is brilliant. It's the games scathing satirical take on real life and the way it turns it into bitingly funny moments is what makes it a great game. I guess we just have to accept that certain games change and develop over time.

I understand what you're saying completely. I often miss how silly San Andreas was, and wish that Rockstar could somehow go back to those days, but I think now, they've taken it upon themselves to be more mature, and perhaps say something significant within their work. There are many develops out there capable of constructing a world as vast and believable as Rockstar.
