@kozakon While Joe is entertaining enough to make watching the entire video worthwhile, he pretty much nails it in four words.

Well, twelve if you want to more detail.

I would have thought "Let's play" videos are generally good for business. I've watched those types of videos when I'm not sure if I want to buy. A good game would benefit from them -- isn't it free advertising?

I thought more about my response and realized that its about YouTube flagging videos, not the publishers. So, yes, it is free advertising... but YouTube isn't going to have any of that.

Youtube videos are pretty much free publicity for games so I don't know why any publisher wouldn't want to allow them. Sure, some LPs for heavily story driven games mean some people won't actually play the game, but likely they don't represent true lost sales anyway.

I know I've been switched on to many indie games through a few youtubers who I subscribe to, but also big publisher games like Hearthstone which I would have had no interest in if TotalBiscuit hadn't kept doing vids & got me interested.

I have spent money because of free videos. Countless others have done the same. Why would you want to attack free commercials for your games?

The following games need to all be out before I consider buying a Wii U:

1. Next big Zelda title (no, remakes don't count.... unless it's Majora's Mask)
2. X
3. Shigeru Miyamoto's secret new IP. Yes people, he IS working on a new IP as we speak! So the people talking about Nintendo not coming up with anything new can shut up now.

i support copyright enforcement - there is too much entitlement culture; it may not be popular, but someone who creates an IP has the right to control it as they see fit

@WhiteTulip1 Also, everyone who got content incorrectly down should be able to get moral damage. The companies should be liable for that.

@WhiteTulip1 The problem is automatic copyright enforcement. The system automatically thinks that the user is breaking copyright, even if its not. Everyone is automatically guilty until proven wrong.

I'm so sick of Mario and I've not actually played a Mario game properly for years. And Zelda. Like listening to the same advertisement on the radio about seven hundred times in a day.

I went to my brothers house to help decorate and him and his work buddies being builders just leave the radio on all day. I wanted to smash the thing into a million pieces before the end of the day.

Not quite as intense with Nintendo but it is the same sort of feeling I get when I hear about them these days.

@spenta If the the game is shit, it will absolutely damage the sales. Same reason some games have review embargoes. Some publishers are very keen to hide their games away to encourage sales.

For a website that bemoans fanboyism and how owning or liking one console should not preclude liking the other, Gamespot does an awful lot of touting of sales figures, which should be meaningless outside of discussions of fanboys or analysts.

Would there be an advantage to any party for taking the 'Let's Play' videos off of YouTube saying it's a copyright violation? In fact, I would beg to argue that it probably helps advertise those companies who may think they are being "violated".

Maybe there is a small group of people who, instead of buying a game, will just watch it's playthrough on YouTube. However I would say that banning these videos STILL wouldn't cause most people in this group to go out and buy the game instead.

Also, there is probably (I'm assuming a lot...I know) a much larger group who look at these videos and it sparks something inside of them to go and buy the game because they want to play it for themselves. This can cause the 'Let's Play' videos become (possibly) the number one advertiser and it doesn't cost the production company a cent!

Who is YouTube helping by not allowing these videos?

Mario Kart is not a system seller. The people who buy Mario Kart (and yes I know "real gamers" buy it, too) are generally moms and dads looking to entertain their kids. Said moms and dads are still not clear that Wii U is an actual console, and they're certainly not going to pony up over $300 for something which already exists on their Wiis.

Mario Kart Wii launched into an environment where Wiis had been flying off the shelves for 2 years, and continued to do so. The Wii U is still stuck at launch-day numbers. The two situations are not comparable. Wii U just doesn't have any consumer appeal, and it's only going to get worse, now that PS4/X1 are here.

Wii U is a great system. When it undersells and people years later declare it a masterpiece like the N64, Gamecube, and Wii I'll laugh. Because Nintendo will have another console out with great games and everyone will be declaring that one a failure too.

The copyright bs is ridiculous. The gameplay vids actually give publishers free advertising.

At least some of the big publishers are challenging it. It'd be in their best marketing interests to do so.

Although some people are waiting for titles like Mario Kart to buy a WiiU, it's not going to be a miracle or anything like the sales of those titles on Wii.

As we all know the Wii was a freak thing, it sold to all those "casuals" right. For most "causuals", the notion of a "system seller" doesn't exist, they don't use that kind of analysis in deciding to buy a console, maybe they don't use any real analysis at all :). I think the Wii's massive install base drove the game sales, not the other way around, so I don't see any sudden massive boom for the WiiU from any title, Mario, Zelda, anything.

You don't think a new Mario Kart, Smash Bros and maybe a new Zelda will boost Nintendo's sells? Smash Bros alone has a bigger cult like following then almost any other game series ever made. I think Wii U will have a huge 2014 and get them right back in the fight. If their 3rd party games are successful we got ourselves a 3 way console war.

@k9kal85 What third-party games? Bayonetta 2?

Fact is, Wii U has already lost. Their momentum was dead out of the gate, from everyone falling out of love with the Wii. The casuals who drove the Wii success have gone to smartphone/tablets. The Wii U is overpriced, with system-seller features that no one wants. And one or two games aren't going to change that. The hardcore Nintendo faithful already bought their consoles at around the launch, and the sales have been in the toilet ever since. The Wii U has zero consumer appeal. Nintendo made a very bad bet on repeating the gimmick success of the Wii.

At this rate, Wii U will be replaced before it approaches even GameCube sales numbers. I'm expecting a new, or heavily redesigned, console in 2015.

I think Sony's strategy of shipping limited quantities of consoles to the stores during the holiday season could hurt them. Microsoft is constantly sending shipments of Xbox One's to Target, Gamespot and the Walmart that I go to. Although they seem to take longer to sell, they do sell out. I was in Target a few days ago and they had 7 Xbox one's sitting in the case with about 5 in the warehouse. The next day I went back to pick something up with my wife and they were all sold out.

Sony isn't intentionally limiting their quantity of PS4s out. They are making them and shipping them out as fast as they can, so I wouldn't really call it a "stragedy' on their part to not have more systems out at retailers. They would if they could.

2 Million xbones sold which means there are 2 Million people being watched by the NSA...lol.

The way the story broke, it feels like Microsoft was aware this was going to happen and they paid people to keep it quiet until after the launch. Sucks to be an xboner these days with 720p-gate and now NSA-gate...lol.
