I think narration over interesting cut scenes would be something to try. Make that the "thing" for the standalone films.

Personally, I think the opening crawl should've been ditched after Jedi. It's not that I don't like the idea of crawls per se, it just seems like Lucasfilm really didn't give much thought to them after Jedi. Something written at an early elementary school level with lots of spacing to hide the lack of prose isn't really satisfying to me.
