@hairdie And that is what is stupid. The fact you think they need to improve the number of pixels on the screen, like it somehow makes a difference to a game.

As long as the game is good I'll take it. I would still be playing my PS1 if they still made games for it.

Imagine how fun games would be if developers spent as much time developing AI, and gameplay as they do graphics.

I still hold most of the best and highest rated games for me personally are on the PS1, PS2 and Original Xbox. I still own my PS1, something tells me I won't be keeping my 360 once I have a next gen console. I never want to replay games now, let alone in a few years.

The sooner developers start making games that are fun and not just all about numbers of pixels the faster the gaming industry will get back on track.

I mean you know it is bad when people legitimately suggest mobile games will overtake consoles and PC. I mean how is that not a massive kick up the ass telling developers they need to start making better games when people are choosing fucking phone games as an alternative?

I understand your frustration with the resolution. its next gen and a 1080p res. is a natural progression of things. it is expected to be delivered by both devices, but that't not the case here sadly. I think I agree with what @Dannystaples14 said though ... a good game is a good game whether its 1080p or not.

@GH05T-666 I was kinda feeling that way, but I'm just about through my backlog of 360/PS3 games, and I just received a substantial bonus from my job, so I figured why not. Plus, I really want a to play Ground Zeroes on next gen, even if it has to be at 720P, and there's no guarantee that PS4's will be available here by then.

Dont do it, wait till there is more games out. There is nothing good for the new consoles yet. I have both PS4 and XB1 and there is nothing to play on them. They are both just gathering dust.

@ECH71 Yeah, but it is the developers in charge of making the games. The same developers who largely neglect things like gameplay and story FOR the eye candy. Because they seem to think if it looks good we'll play it regardless.

I mean take Bioshock Infinite. I LOVED that game. Totally loved every second of it and in terms of visuals it was pretty but it sure wasn't Crytek standards. Yet because the story and the characters and the atmosphere were so well done it didn't matter. I still loved every second of it.

I'll take decent visuals but only when the story and actual game have been done properly. And those are the places that developers normally end up neglecting.

That is why I think developers should stop pissing around with new and better visuals. I mean who gives a crap about new smoke effects or lighting algorithms? I want a good game that will deliver a great experience nothing else. They can work on graphics when they figure out how to make a game I actually want to play. Unlike most of the games last generation.

People used to play games for the fun and the story, now they only seem to care about resolutions and textures.

Honestly if the gamers all want games like Crysis where the only thing they bring to the table is graphics, I don't know how much more the industry will be able to sustain me before I just leave it for good.

@Dannystaples14 Then your issue is with the developers not balancing their focus evenly between graphics and gameplay. Developers like Crytek who try to sugar coat crap with pretty visuals. I'm with you on that.

As for visuals not adding to the experience however, I respectfully disagree. Better graphics is eye candy, better presentation. Sure there may be gamers out there like yourself who don't get tired of seeing the same graphics decades later but obviously the majority of gamers do. This means there's a serious enough demand for it otherwise the industry won't be supplying it.

I'd happily play a PS1 game that has modern gameplay, and AI and dialogue but still looked like it did back on the PS1.

I've played PC games maxed out before and I've never felt that the added visuals added anything to game experience. Games will still suck badly even if they look nice. If a game is awesome it could look like a PS1 game and still be awesome to play.

My main problem is though there is a definite correlation between games looking great and games sucking badly.

Crytek games in general look great and most of them are boring.

It can't be a coincidence that consoles have been getting more and more obsessed with graphics since the last generation and the last generation was also the weakest one in terms of games from what I can see.

The number of games I hold close and can say "Yes that game was totally off the scale awesome" from last gen can be counted on one hand.

If we cared more about gameplay than visuals, games of today would look a decade older. You have to care about both.

Since your post is within a "thread" I started, I'm assuming you're implying I'm one of those fanboys... to which I say I'm a PC gamer -- these issues don't really affect me.

I just personally don't like Microsoft since they've forsaken PC (Windows) gamers when they entered the console business. When they made most games Xbox exclusives despite Windows being one of their own platforms.

That's why I'm annoyed by all this "it's no big deal" BS spin they dish out, and all the gamers who enable them to continue screwing them over and the industry in general.

I never said it was a bad thing, I'm just skeptical about its ability to level the playing field as far as visual capability goes...

...unless, if by cloud they mean a service like OnLive, which would a) be cheating b) be an inconvenience for those who don't have a fast 24/7 connection c) suck for those who paid hundreds of dollars for a glorified streaming box.

@ECH71 @Diegoctba So? Every little helps as far as I'm concerned and if they don't at least have a go, then the process will never improve will it?

Sure it might not be changing the game by massive amounts but why does that make it such a bad thing? At least Microsoft are having at go at innovation.
