I think the "zerg" term stands without the compound "rush" as well. All Starcraft races have rush strategies. The verb form of "zerg" means to attack with a haphazard swarm of units in overwhelming numbers, a la zerglings, the fast, cheap and numerous basic unit of the Zerg race. I play a lot of Planetside 2 (a game with no aliens in it at all), and everyone says, "Let's zerg over there," or "We'll foot-zerg it to that base" or "Let's just follow the zerg", meaning, "follow the loosely organized swarm of allied units". I doubt everyone hearing those things has played Starcraft, but no one ever asks what it means, because everyone knows.

@tempertress @Exquisite I think you might be the only person in the GS staff that actually bothers to read most comments and actually replies politely (even though some people don't extend you the same courtesy) and even accept criticism. Very refreshing, keep up the good work.

Also, Gaming Meme History is one of my favorite GS segments...thank you for filling my head with cliché memes that I've been trying to forget XD

@Exquisite Yeah it's shortened to "zerg" or "getting zerged"

On the internet no word is short enough not to get shortened even further.

@Saketume In Starcraft, or perhaps any RTS, "rush" describes any early attack strategy. Otherwise the meme would never have attached to the Zerg race in particular, and would have been a more generalized term, like "Starcraft rush" or even something completely different like "zealot rush".

My contention is that this meme never was "zerg rush" to be shortened in the first place. "Zerg" means to attack as ONLY the Zerg race can (at least in the SC universe), with a large swarm of weak units.

@Exquisite myeah it has to do with the nature of the zerg race. The way you get 2 zerglings for the price of one unit and the fact that in the original game if you wanted to rush someone early the zerg way was the quickest and most common. Everyone feared those early zerglings before you got some defence up.

Personally I prefered to make gazillions of semi upgraded hydras later on instead.

It's not a rush then though.

So getting zerged (overwhelmed by numbers) is not exactly the same as getting zerg rushed (very early attack in the game) in my eyes.

Moment of clarity: man I need something to do rather than spam gamespot with comments

I always thought "kek" came from World of Warcraft, wherein the cross-faction language scrambler would change the Alliance word "lol" into the Horde word "kek", or do Korean gamer memes predate WoW (2003)? It seems to me just as likely Koreans got "kek" or "kekeke" from the WoW translation of "lol" and "lololol", and not the other way around.

@Enragedhydra

I did but I never saw anyone type "kekeke" back then. I mostly played with my RL Swedish friends though.

@Enragedhydra @Exquisite I did, of course. I just didn't play online with Koreans. That's why I wonder if the terms really predates WoW.

Double posting like a boss

Btw in case someone is not familiar with the game (really?)

Zerg was the only (or at least easiest) race to rush with. If you sacrificed long term planning and quickly built a few zerglings you could win the game very early with just a few units. Provided of course that you could find your opponent's base. It is a gamble though because if they manage to defend successfully you're pretty much screwed.

@plusnminus

Some guy further down the comments mentioned it's from the Maxx. I was never into that so I have no clue.

Me I thought it was either just a bunch of "ok ok ok"s tied together "kay kay kay" It was just a theory though :P

Also worth mentioning is that in World of Warcraft if you speak to the other faction they'll just see gibberish. If you type "lol" it always comes out as "kek" though. That in turn made it a fad to just say "kek" instead of "lol".

So kekeke would be about the same as typing lololo then.

What is funny is that even my father who hasn't played a game outside of Monopoly knows what a Zerg Rush is.

Yay, I got my Gaming Meme History fix; thanks, Jess!

I think Sinistar would be a great meme to cover. : )

"I AM SINISTAR." and "BEWARE, I LIVE!" and "RUN, COWARD!" and "I HUNGER!"

...Damn, I can't believe no one's made a new Sinistar game during the past 30 years. I'm going to upload it as my avatar to increase Sinistar awareness. Maybe some developer will get the hint!

@Renunciation You gave me something to think about. I'd forgotten about Sinistar.

The thing is that Galactus in Marvel Comics catchphrase is "I Hunger" and he's from the 60's

Now I know he's always been hungry but I'm not sure when he first started saying that exact phrase.

My money is on Marvel for being first (they usually are) but I need to find some comic books where he says it that predate the game.

Hmmm naw too lazy. It will solve itself eventually :P

@Saketume @Renunciation It's quite possible that Sinistar's creators were influenced by Galactus' catchphrase -- but I suppose we won't know for sure unless we ask them.

Or maybe I could check around online and see if they've mentioned being inspired by Galactus, but... I'm lazy, too. :D
