The Mega Man series in particular is a franchise I hold extremely close to my heart. Growing up in post-Soviet Union Russia made it really difficult to game back in those days. Luckily I was about to import those games and since they weren't dialogue-heavy games, I was able to play and enjoy them.

Outstanding video Mr. Toyad !

Excellent piece of work, I liked all the information and how it was delivered, an example in video game journalism. Let me congratulate you - Gamespot took an awesome decition in having among their ranks.

@RaphaeI Thanks Raphael. That means a lot! :) I'll hopefully do more retrospectives on old games/franchises in 2013 and beyond.

I remember the year I got Mega Man as a Christmas gift. Really loved that game. Shame Capcom has pretty much taken a dump on the franchise.

[5:11] proves that this guy is F&*king insane. The Mega Man 1994 animated series was absolutely awesome. I still hum the theme song now and again.

"Na na na naaaa,

Super Fighting Robot,

Na na na naaaa,

MEGA MAN!..."

I especially loved the episode Mega man turns evil.

I fired up Mega Man Powered Up the other day after 6 years, and to my surprise, people are still making levels for it. It's a testament to how great the game is, and IMO, proof that Mega Man Universe would've done well had they not canceled it.

Awesome reminiscent video. I'm really appreciated for making this. It's one of the biggest games I've grown up with. I played the very first one over 2 decades ago.

I don't know about you guys, but I could really go for a revival of the X series. Make a Megaman X9 in the style of the first three in the X series. Give it HD 2D graphics, kinda like the new Rayman, and drop that Axel turd. Then we're good to go.

@squall_83 You say you want X9 to be like the first 3 snes X games, then you say it should have HD graphics. wut.

@squall_83 Drop Axel AND Alia. And NEVER have some character try to explain to you how collecting and using weapons works, or even give another stupid ten-second long "WARNING" screen when you enter a boss room.

@Marscaleb haha that's true, by X6 you really had to sit there and wait for the WARNING message to finally stop.

I think no one can deny that the Mega Man franchise revolutionized gaming in pretty much every aspect. Its music was catchy and distinctive from the very first Classic game to the very last Star Force game. The gameplay was remarkably tight and enjoyable, despite its beginnings on a restricted but equally as revolutionary console. The character himself, though basic in most regards design-wise, is easily recognizable among such gaming icons as Mario and Sonic. Capcom's music team, Kitamura's initial design, and Inafune's genius was a match made in heaven.

Happy 25th birthday, Rock!

@marioismyname Good gameplay, but it was missing something that Mega Man Zero did better.

Also, they tried to crap too much convoluted and boring story down your throat.

@marioismyname It is an awesome game, true to its roots.

I loved the way the character as a human transformed into one of the robot masters, nice touch. It's different from the traditional formula of acquiring the enemy's power, now to become the robot itself.

Also ZX Advent was a great game.

I hate that Megaman pretty much died out when I finally had the opportunity to start buying my own games. Oh well, at least I have a rich history of games to pull from. So far the only Megaman game I've ever beaten was Megaman X (good times).

I have Megaman vs Street Fighter downloaded but I'm so inept with keyboard controls (right now) that I'm struggling with it. Can you use a 360 controller for that game?

@abHS4L88 Yes, if you have a wired 360 controller like I do. I don't think a wireless one works. I think the wired have USB ports.

@abHS4L88 The "charging" USB cable doesn't charge the controller; that's the wired controller function.

My ultime favorite megman game was X6, maybe one of the last great ones, it had the shadow ghost nightmare zero messing your sh*t up, and it had some of the best levels too, I loved the central museum and it had the blade armor and all that stuff, plus I'd say it was one of the hardest. It's not like we have a shortage of megaman games to finnish and play.

Mega Man X1, X2 and X3 is where the game shined for me. The difficulty, the well designed maps, the MUSIC!!! some of the best music ever, the villains, Zero being part of the game, etc... After that it all went downhill for me.

ohh and remember Vile =)

I bought the mega man ps2 anniversary collection from which I liked mega man 8 the most and I play to this day. I also enjoyed the mega man x7 with mostly 2d gameplay that would sometimes show off 3d specs. I miss all those games tremendously and wish more and more would just keep on coming.

I would like to see mega man stay in 2d. I don't get why the industry has abandoned side scrollers. I would love to see a side scrolling mega man with current gen grafics.
