Fallout 3 Vs. Fallout New Vegas - Which Is Better? | Versus

Bethesda finally lifted the lid on Fallout 76 at E3 2018, but which of the two most beloved Fallout games is best?

Fallout is one of the biggest franchises in video games, with its huge open worlds regularly attracting millions of players. Over time the series has gone from an isometric turn-based RPG into a huge, sprawling, 3D behemoth, and it frequently shows off some of America's iconic landmarks and cities in post-apocalyptic ruin. Fallout 76 is the latest in the series to be revealed, and it looks intriguing; but its E3 2018 reveal got us thinking about which of the two most beloved modern Fallout games we think is best--Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas?

We decided to sit down and have a lighthearted but passionate debate about which game we prefer. Fighting for New Vegas and its nuclear neon sins is one-armed bandit Dave Jewitt. On Fallout 3's side, meanwhile, is GameSpot's own radioactive villain, Mike Mahardy.

Watch the video above to see how the debate turned out. The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective picks. Alongside the serious analysis from each side, there's also some friendly fun-making and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quickfire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we held a live episode of Versus to decide who won E3--Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo? We'll let you decide the winner. Make sure to get your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

New Vegas and by far. The story by Chris Avellone (who works on Dyling Light 2 now) was so good.

Bethesda should ask Obsidian to do another spin-off IMO.

Fallout 3 is my personal favourite. A big reason being you can start that game very differently upon leaving the vault by choosing where you go. For instance once I had all the dlc I did a new play through and headed straight to the alien ship first, in New Vegas you are almost forced down a linear path at the beginning of the game due deathclaw's/Cazador's blocking you from going North. Other little things I prefer in 3 but I'm not going to list them all but I'll say this 3 feels like a Wasteland while New Vega's feels like a desert with tribes scattered about.

@johno357: Not really you have to go all the way to the very top of the map for that to happen and they can be avoided to an extent. The high level enemies were deliberately there on New Vega's to force the player in a certain direction.

This is definitely an interesting one, especially when you consider the contenders are not only in the same franchise but proceed one another directly.

In that sense I’m guessing one would have to look at the criteria in order to determine if one meets the requirements that put it above the other.

From what I gather many in the gaming community place New Vegas ahead of Fallout 3 in terms of being the overall better game but Fallout 3 had more of an impact on the gaming industry as a whole. I guess a somewhat equal analogy would be does someone think Zelda: Breath of The Wild is an overall better game than the original Legend of Zelda?

Zelda BOTW is clearly the better game from a design and gameplay standpoint but The Original The Legend of Zelda set a new standard for videogames and shaped and influenced the entire industry. The same could be said about Ocarina of time.

How does one choose?

All I know, is that between these 2 contenders I personally know which is the winner.

The winner is…

-… FALLOUT ? NINJA APPROVED-

Fallout 3's got Harold, and I love Harold. However, New Vegas is undoubtedly the superior title, and eclectic is a good word with which to describe that game. That said, both suck due to Bethesda's signature crappy rendering of Interplay's IP.

Burn in hell Bethesda! ?

1. Fallout 2

2. Fallout 1

3. Vegas

4. Fallout 3

5. Fallout 4

As for which the worst will be, a tight race between FO76 and FO BOS.

I did not add FO Tactics (although a superb game), it is a turn based strategy game with zero RPG but it is a must have for any Fallout fan even if not a die hard fan.

@RELeon: thanks! I did not add it because it had 0 rpg, but I made an addition now to the text since the game is way too good to simply be ignored.

Oh, it's New Vegas. It's not even close. New Vegas is still the best game in the whole series.

@bongaconga: The Fallout 2 people made Vegas, you know that?

Story is the best in Vegas agreed, but Fallout 2 is brutal and unforgiving and hard, thus beating it was a great reward. Most players do not even pass the Fallout 2 intro mission

@nibbin1191: no they don't need to die because in most games, it is fact. FO1 and FO2 was a brutal, hard but highly rewarding and accomplishing RPG experience. Fallout 3 gradually changed that but Vegas could somewhat save it until Fallout 4 garbage came out and turned it into a base building FPS shooter with boring ass sleeping pill quests. No, Fallout 1 and 2 don't need to die and I am sick of people that are not able to play it and lie about it that they did, pull the "oh those games did not age well" bullshit, because the real Fallout community out there, keeps playing FO1 and 2 at least once a year since the games came out.

Furthermore, the death animations on Fallout 1 and 2 still beat any modern Fallout game by a milestone !!!!

@nibbin1191:

@nibbin1191:I have a 1080ti and 3440x 1440 on an i7 5960x. I did move on more than you probably, but I have been playing games since the days of the Atari, thus I set extremely high standards (maybe too high for today's games), and all I can tell you is that I had to indeed make 3 retro gaming computers (P2mmx Voodoo 3, AMD XP Voodoo 5, and P4 Ati Radeon 9800pro), because the games of today are just utter crap and it does not end with Fallout 4, and FO76.

It is the crap of today, that makes people go back to the past, you should respect that, and not laugh at or downplay such behavior. What makes me mad the most is that I am actually trying to help you guys to be at least able to play some real good game again for a change because sorry, many of you just don't know what real good games are, but maybe that is a good thing. Either way, not your fault but stop protecting garbage and downplay classic games.

@bongaconga: Nah. Fallout 1 and 2 are real old. I've got nostalgia, but it can't power through those graphics and clunky interface anymore. The writing in Fallout 1 is still good (even if the main plot doesn't really have a lot of depth to it), but Fallout 2 was packed with a little too much humor and a whole bunch of pop culture references that started to grate well before I got through that game.

I think New Vegas tells a more interesting story than 1 or 2, and I think it has the most consistently solid writing in the whole series. And it plays better than everything except 4. And it has massive mod support.

I still hope that Obsidian gets another chance at Fallout, someday.

@Mogan: Meh, See your point but sorry, the death animations when landing crits is reason alone to keep replaying FO1 and 2, lol. You shoot half the enemy's upper body off and see him fall down, crawling on one arm away from you while the guts spill out, until he finally tries to make the last effort with his only remaining arm until blood pours out of all the holes left of his body (including mouth) until he is finally dead. So this is one of like what, dozens of different types?

In modern FO games, always the same. Either drops dead, desintegrates or turns into ash...

Call me crazy but I loved those and usually hate death animations a la Mortak Kombat, but in Fallout, loved em.

If we are talking just strictly at launch, Fallout 3 by far. New Vegas was plagued by bugs are freezing issues. If you are talking 2018 New Vegas on PC is definitely better, it has been supported so well with add-ins over the years.
