Fallout 3 Vs. Fallout New Vegas - Which Is Better? | Versus

Bethesda finally lifted the lid on Fallout 76 at E3 2018, but which of the two most beloved Fallout games is best?

Fallout is one of the biggest franchises in video games, with its huge open worlds regularly attracting millions of players. Over time the series has gone from an isometric turn-based RPG into a huge, sprawling, 3D behemoth, and it frequently shows off some of America's iconic landmarks and cities in post-apocalyptic ruin. Fallout 76 is the latest in the series to be revealed, and it looks intriguing; but its E3 2018 reveal got us thinking about which of the two most beloved modern Fallout games we think is best--Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas?

We decided to sit down and have a lighthearted but passionate debate about which game we prefer. Fighting for New Vegas and its nuclear neon sins is one-armed bandit Dave Jewitt. On Fallout 3's side, meanwhile, is GameSpot's own radioactive villain, Mike Mahardy.

Watch the video above to see how the debate turned out. The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective picks. Alongside the serious analysis from each side, there's also some friendly fun-making and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quickfire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we held a live episode of Versus to decide who won E3--Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo? We'll let you decide the winner. Make sure to get your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

Mike Mahardy won because he made a mediocre quality game sound good, Fallout 3.

New Vegas is the better game though.

I'm currently playing Fallout: New Vegas which feels like an improved Fallout 3. I prefer New Vegas over Fallout 3 not just because I'm from Nevada. The color palette in New Vegas is better than Fallout 3's which seemed to have mostly varying shades of green (BLEH).

Some made a big deal of the decision making on New Vegas. I wasn't too deep into it. If the decision-making dragged on too long. I cut it short and went on with the game. For example, in the Lonesome Road DLC, As soon as I saw Ulysses, I trained my best weapon on him and eventually killed him. I wasn't in the mood to be philosophical. Then, I used his nukes to vaporize the Legion. No more problems with Caesar. Then, I took out Mr. House upon returning to The Strip. I still got some unfinished quests. But, with the top leaders dead, I get the feeling the game will be ending soon.

Fallout 3 was original, vast, engrossing. To me a follow up game would need to make significant improvements to all aspects developed and conceived in the original. My vote is for Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 was great but I was only compelled to play through it twice. NV on the other hand, I cant even count how many times I have played through that game. I guess it must be NV for me by a long shot.

Good question I like it. The experience of 3 was something else. The stories in quest lines are very similar to the recent fallout 4. Watching megaton explode, buying and selling in a huge destroyed carrier, the storyline altogether was fantastic. With new vegas the rpg elements were solid. The weapons, armour and survival elements were stronger though I found the Mojave desert pretty boring and unattractive in comparison to a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. I really enjoyed taking that road, finding the pillaged ruins the legion had massacred with a lottery and just the factions in general were done quite well. I feel like all of those positive elements along with settlements merged correctly would have made fallout 4 a much longer lasting experience whereas it seemed to lose its charm fairly early on. Both games are fantastic, but I really want to see a molded improvement of both using the charm of bethesda and the renowned rpg mechanics of obsidian.

We all know which one is objectively better. I haven't seen anyone differ from that.

In the video Mike said,

“To vote for who you think argued their case better on this episode, we're going to be throwing up a clickable poll, right here.”

To get political here for a second, the point of a debate is supposed to be to get down to the truth of a matter, not to determine which of two randomly selected people is the best at talking. The guy who can talk better than anyone else doesn't define reality. Especially if he's not even debating and is just the guy who can throw out the funniest insults and most addictive chants. Before you know it it's a battle of bank accounts, or even a beauty contest.

My vote goes to NV over Fallout 3, even though I enjoyed both.

@BLKCrystilMage's outline of NV narrative factional choices is spot-on and is a big part of what makes NV so compelling. So much so, that I've found myself wantingly replaying the game just to see how the endings played out (Caveat: I choose not to play the Caesar's Legion for-the-win option.) The various philosophical bents gave the narrative a BioShock feel to it.

Then there is all the allusions to 1960 Las Vegas personalities from Howard Hughes, Rat Pack (Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Bishop, &c), Elvis, Steve Wynn and others that gave these characters a familiar déjà vu feel to them which added to the intrigue of the overall narrative.

However, one of the appealing aspects of the game play was the character dialogs. While most were somewhat straight-forward and uninteresting, there were several that were outrageously hilarious like some of the Camp McCarran sniper team members or the Power Ganger at Nipton, etc. Even Caesar's serious discussion of Hegelian Dialectics was worth the delay in game play.

The DLC packs were integrated into the main game in such a way as to pique one's interest into finding out what these obscure references were all about, with Old World Blues being a masterful whimsical diversion.

Fallout 3 was great for rebooting the IP and turning it into an amazing FPS with the open world and VATS system.

BUT I would still say NV was overall better. Story was more entertaining, environments varied a bit more, weapon selection was better, ammo customization was a MAJOR improvement(IMO).

Both were great games, but I think NV takes the cake.

Not using mods for either one, the graphics in Fallout 3 weren't very good looking. Fallout New Vegas looked good on the other hand and I liked the different story paths. I was bored of Fallout 3 after 5 hours while I got 74 hours into New Vegas and finished each end story.

I liked New Vegas a lot and it easily beats Fallout 3 for me.

I enjoyed 3 more than NV. I finished 3 at least 5 times, I finished NV once. I had no idea what I did, but at some point I couldn't go anywhere cause all factions were trying to kill me. I had to rush to the end, just to get it over with. Plus the sky was always the same. I wish I could play NV on PC, if only for the mods, but it's crashes all the time and well, no one wants to sit through that.

3 over New Vegas I mean really set a post apocalypse game in the dessert. That's the cheap way to do it. I only played a little of one and none of two, just to hard for me to go back to that type of game play. But for me the gap would be little not large, I put a ton of hours in them both and even 4.

Best part of New Vegas's narrative is that you can make a solid argument for why ANY of the 4 factions is a good choice, but you can't make a case for how any of them are perfect. The NCR has all the strengths of old-world democracy, but all of its weaknesses as well. The Legion offers absolute security and trains its members to be resilient enough to survive in a nuclear wasteland, but is terribly oppressive and too centered on its leader to be stable in the long-term. Mr. House offers the best hope for the restoration of the human race's potential and ensures regional security and economic infrastructure in a way the Legion and NCR can't, but won't tolerate any deviation from his vision. Independence ensures that everyone can forge their own paths, but doesn't necessarily give the regional leadership that will allow them to reach their full potential. It just goes to show how much thought Avellone put into NV's story.

@BLKCrystilMage: **** yea man. I've gotten into arguments with my friends about which Fallout games are the best and I always defend New Vegas and have used this exact argument to justify it. The story in New Vegas far outweighed any of the stories from any of the other games because it was so believable and authentic. None of that "big evil bad guys want to destroy the world" crap that was prevalent in the other games. Just differing ideologies and nations competing and you have to decide who you agree with most. Nothing more, nothing less.

Consider them Part 1 and 2 of the same game so its hard to choose (not even entirely sure which side-quests were in which) but prefer the world in 3 and quests in NV. So I guess ...NV wins overall(?) Though English dude had a more passionate argument so I'd give it to him.

There is no question, New Vegas was much better as it had improved gameplay, a more interesting world and it felt much more like a true sequel to Fallout 2 than Fallout 3 did. Something about the atmosphere in Fallout 3 just felt off to me while New Vegas felt like a truly spiritual successor to the old games, just with a different perspective.

And it gave me a look into a side of the Fallout universe that I found more refreshing than Fallout 3 did. I also found the story and the factions to be way more interesting than the boring I have to find "insert person" type story. I found it kinda lazy that they did such a similar premise for Fallout 4, just another find missing person story.

But both are good games, although New Vegas is the game I spent the most time with. But I do have to add that I did not play it at launch, it took me almost 2 years before I played it and so I did not have to deal with a lot of bugs.

My humble opinion...Fallout 3. Immediately after exiting the vault I was blown away for hours roaming around in the near vicinity to Megaton. Although I liked New Vegas in the end, it took me a long time to like it, and I was never as amazed by anything in that game as I was by Fallout 3.

Didn't play Fallout 3, but loved New Vegas. The story and RPG mechanics were on point and really enjoyable. Much better than the streamlined Fallout 4 IMO.

Todd Howard and his team have become out of touch on how to make excellent RPG's. Obsidian Entertainment or Larian Studios should be given the chance to make future Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.

@JEF8484: You must work for Bethesda and projected there, since New Vegas was 50 times better than 3 and all you Bethesda people were butthurt when Obsidian blew everything away story wise. So you didn't even read that he said Fallout 4. Check your ego :) Also, see a therapist if it's bugging you too much.

@JEF8484: Obsidian Entertainment still makes great RPG's to this day, while I can't say the same for Bethesda Studios. Skyrim and Fallout 4 have been streamlined and dumbed down in plot and RPG mechanics significantly, the very essence that makes these franchises great.

So yeah, Bethesda have become out of touch. Try reading my comment again.

Pffftttt I played and enjoyed them both. One is not better then the other. I will say they both are MUCH better then FO 4. If I want to settlement build I will play a game like Civ or even the recently release Surviving Mars, they do it so much better then that clunky FO 4.
