The camera is zoomed out to give a wide view of the surroundings and could have provided a good view of incoming hordes, but the darkness here negates that advantage. A more significant setback from this zoomed-out view is that the zombie and player character models become smaller on-screen, and it also looks like the game requires pin-point accuracy to hit zombies. The laser helps of course, as it is apparently intended to both tell the distance between the player and the zombie being pointed at and also tell the player that it's there if the surroundings are dark. Still, this being an SCEA game, it's odd that Move-compatibility has not been added to this game. The Move may give an easier time directing the player character's aim around than an analog stick.
