Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Takes A Gamble With A Nostalgic Mashup

Will Black Ops 4's multiplayer, battle royale, and zombies modes come together to win over fans?

Call of Duty has spent much of the last ten years setting the trend and tone for multiplayer shooters. The genre is more crowded than ever now, with different flavors popping up and taking hold quickly. What's a venerable franchise leader to do? Borrow bits and pieces from all of them, of course.

In the video above, we break down all the ways Black Ops 4 is modeling itself as a mash-up of shooter influences. It has a little bit of the hero shooter like Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege, with its defined characters, super-moves with long cooldowns, and specific weapon talents and attachments. Zombies lets players go on raids, while the Situations appear similar to hostage rescues in Rainbow Six. Plus the all-new Blackout mode is a clear riff on the booming popularity of the Battle Royale.

About all that's missing now is a collectible card game, but then, there’s always a chance it'll reveal that at E3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is coming October 12 to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
