Building Overwatch League - Overwatch League, Assemble

In the second part of this series, we talk to the people responsible for the Overwatch League broadcast, and find out how they translate such a fast-paced game into stories that people can follow and engage with.

In the previous episode of Building Overwatch League, we talked to game director Jeff Kaplan and league commissioner Nate Nanzer about why they believe esports matter, and their vision for a future where a much broader audience can enjoy competitive gaming as a form of entertainment. For the second episode we explored what it takes to bring Overwatch matches to people in a way that is approachable and compelling.

To get a better understanding of this, we spoke to the various members of the Overwatch League production team, from analysts and presenters such as Josh "Sideshow" Wilkinson, Soe Gschwind-Penski, and Auguste "Semmler" Massonnat, to lead observer Jason "Alchemist" Baker, who leads the team that frame the action we see on screens. Each person is critical to ensuring Overwatch League puts its best foot forward, and in the episode they talk about why that's important and how they do it.

Building Overwatch League is a five-part series that takes an in-depth look at Blizzard's ambition, exploring the core pillars holding it up. Future episodes will examine the business behind the league, speak to the players at the heart of it, and invite the people most committed to it to tell us about their hopes for its future.

Just as Overwatch League changes, Overwatch the game continues to evolve. Blizzard recently detailed a new Overwatch patch that introduces a number of key social feature. It also released a new version of Symmetra to the PTR, allowing players to take her new abilities for a test drive before she is properly released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
