Best of 2008 Game of the Year

well if anyone played all the great games of 2008 then of course MGS4 wins, it actually delivers wat the PS3 was supposed to deliver, a freaking epic game even if it wasnt as fast paced as GoW 2 or Resistance 2 it still had it impacts on gaming and its unforgettable. And why is braid nominated? it qualify as best 2d GOTY but not the GOTY and why dont they have best 2d game?

Really?? REALLY???!!! I was not blown away by it. I thought it badly written and it contains some cringe worthy characters. Found it hard to play it as a stealth game like past episodes, and the 3rd person action shooter game play felt stunted and grew very tiresome. My personal choice would have been Fallout 3. That game has sucked me in and it just won't let go.

MGS 4 was obviously going to win, but i gotta say, Not enough love for GTA IV

This game has it all, seldom you see a great game walk the walk and talk the talk. MGS4 does both, truly epic.

I broke my left analog stick on the microwave sequence. I was pressing so hard on my controller. MGS4 is epic. Everyone needs to play this game.

The other winner couldve been Fallout 3, but MGS4 deserves it all the while.

For me MGS4 was not the perfect game, and I would only give it an 8.5 out of 10. The cutscenes were too long, and the story telling became increasingly silly as the game went on. That being said, it was the best game of 2008 for me, without a doubt. It's the game we can be most proud of. The gameplay, graphics, and story all combined into an unforgettable experience.

Kojima has his detractors, and I was once one of the biggest. MGS4 changed all that for me, and I am not by any means a Sony apologist. The game had the epic scope and feel that has generally eluded this generation of gaming, and the true testament to the game's brilliance is the fact that a non-MGS fan like myself will play through the game multiple times simply to experience it again and again. Say what you will about the lengthy cutscenes, occasionally strained dialogue and sometimes bombastic score--MGS4's excesses are easily forgiven when its control scheme, audiovisual fidelity, and originality are so impressive. This was a great year for gaming generally, so MGS4's victory is indeed a hallmark for the industry, regardless of platform.

Nice - a PS3 title for GoTY finally!

Not a surprise given the earlier victories Gamespot gave this title. Personally, I think it's the most overrated game of the year. Gameplay remains years behind its competitors, online is a joke and the cutscenes are still juvenile, self-indulgent and way too long. What good are cutscenes showing you all the things you CAN'T actually do in the game? Fallout 3 was my pick.

Gamespot nailed it. This game deserves Game of the Year. I think the comment that really hit home for me was how the cut-scenes manage to transition seamlessly between movie and gameplay. That really blew me away as I had instances where Snake stopped moving and I was wondering what happened to the cut-scene. And also, the microwave oven scene was probably the most memorable scene from any game of all time. Just... shocking.

Obvious. Definitely deserved to win.

As soon as I played this game, I knew it was going to be game of the year, and I'm glad I was right, it deserves every bit of that award. Congratulations Hideo and thank you for taking me on a epic ride that lasted 10 years!

MGS4 is not coming to the 360. why is everyone saying this? dont have a ps3 and dont care about MGS.

One of the editors nailed it right down, people hate MGS4 for the same reason why a lot of people loved the game, it's more movie than game, but it's also an achievement because it represents the marriage of games and movie at it's finest moment.

Why can;t we all get along? I, personally never ask if a 360 exclusive comes out on the PS3, in hopes that someone with a 360 will do the same and enjoy what they have. (plus they usually come out on PC at some point). Share the love.

Why does everyone think MGS4 is coming out on 360? Its got a much less chance of that as PS3 getting Left 4 Dead, which 360 fanboys say will never happen.

When MSG4 comes out on the 360, Ill either buy it or rent it and see if its good as everyone says it is. Until that time comes GTA4 is still the best game of 2008 foir me.

This game was clearly one of the best gaming experiences of all time. I bought a PS3 on a whim and wasn't sure I made the right move. After playing MGS4, I feel as if my purchase was justified, even if only for this 1 gaming experience that I will never forget.

Congrats MGS4. You earned it. I'm a 360 owner, and I'm playing MGS4 at someone else's house. I'm not done with it yet, but it totally earned it. You did good, Kojima.

metal gear solid 4!!!! yes i knew it, gamespot knows its the best unlike spikes vga, gta4 GoY WHAT! no way is gta4 better than mgs4, sure gta4 is a good game, but nowhere near the quality of mgs4. im on my 4th playthrough right now, and it just never gets old, i love the cutscenes, and (SPOILER) the scene when theyre on the bridge with snake and big momma, when snake saves her from the fire. (sniff) epic. and also when raiden saves snake from the outer haven ship, Epic. and when raiden first comes out and fights with vamp, EPIC. and the ending, EPIC. everything is epic from this game. my favorite by far, my brother is stupid for not playing this, hes stuck on cod waw, which cant even touch mgs4, its online its fun but then again it just copied another great game cod4. I wish he would play it, that way he would agree when i tell him its the best game ever! and not say yeah right, when hes judging it without even playing it

I am very pleased that MGS4 won GOTY! I was sick when it launched. (I had pneumonia) And I played it through in two days. I was bolted in front of my PS3. Gears of War didn't make me half as addicted. So for me its ok that its not nominated. Fallout 3 has been close, but not even GTA4 made me feel like MGS4 did. Its amazing and a rightful winner! On a side note. Second year in a row GS choose the same GOTY as me!

I THOUGHT the list of nominees was pretty good. Fallout 3 was a fantastic game and I still cant stop playing it (PC version). I CAN see why Gears 2 wasn't nominated because though it was a blast to play (co-op) it didn't really do anything amazingly special. I AGREE completely with MGS4 being named game of the year. Anyone who says otherwise is either a fanboy of some other game or system, or someone who has never played an MGS game. ALL IN ALL, this was a great year for gaming and we should all be happy for that and stop arguing :D

mgs 4 might as well just marry ocarina of time because it rightfully earns its place right next to it,its one of the best games ever made and in my opinion in the top 3 this game just owns,when i 1st played it i was trying to find something that was wrong with it but i couldnt find anything this game is just perfect i mean omg i may as well call it the best game ever,i think the only thing wrong with this game is that there is nothing wrong with it everytghing is just right,graphics phenimenal,sound phenomenal,gameplay phenomenal,story phenomenal,presentation phenomenal,lasting appeal phenomenal, this game is just tooooooooooooo good, unbeleiveble...im sorry i have to go and play this game right now i need to go through it again,its really hard seeing a game in the future surpassing mgs 4 i just cant see it goodbye everyone im off to play mgs4 for the 5th time.oh and 360 sucks! lol sorry after playing this game i just had to say it lool l8a everyone peace!
