Best of 2008 Game of the Year

MGS4 truly deserved it this year. If you have not played it, you will probably not understand how powerful it is. This game has a very big heart and ambition and closes the series better than I could have dreamed of. Please do not post hate comments and please don't say the game should not have won if you haven't played it. That's called being ignorant and stupid. If you do not agree, that's fine. We all have our own opinions, and GS is no exception. They might not stand for the entire gaming community, but at the very least, show some respect and appreciation for their decision and the game itself.

So now movies can be game of the year? Why didn't Dark Knight win, I heard that was a good movie too.

Thank God GTA IV didn't win. Not only is MGS4 the best game of 2008, it's the best game of the decade. If you don't at least recognize it as a quality game you're either an ignorant fool or you have never experienced it. You can say it's not for you, not your favorite, or that you think something else is better, but saying "MGS4 suxxxorzzz blow Sony j00 fanboizz" just makes everyone want to stab you in the jaw. And sales mean nothing when awarding "Best Game of 2008." Look at all the decent selling duds of the past. Hell, Shaq Fu broke even. SHAQ FU! If sales mattered it would be called "Best Selling Game of 2008." And that award would suck because everyone would already know who the winner was.

For the pple who disagree with the result: Stop Complaining MGS4 won period... if u havent played the game then u wouldnt understand at all yea GTA4 has better sells but itz been out for longer and did u know that iitz 360 and pc so ur abviously gettin more sellz..geez do the math besides sells doesnt define GOTY itz the GAME MGS4 deserved it and im glad b/c now pple who say it sucked well this proves it

Yes!! Respect to Sensei Hideo Kojima and his personal staff for the "Supreme Solid Masterpiece"! To the PS3 owners "you got Extremely lucky that Konami decided to release exclusively . It may be the end of Solid Snake, but the series will continue. Also MGS4 has won other awards to combine as "The Bonafide Brilliant Blockbuster of 2008". Don't forget PS3 owners, MGS4 is the first exclusive game has earned a perfect 10 (forget that game form a northeast studio that I won't mention). For me MGS is Bigger, Better, Brutal and Greater than any other PS3 game. Until then enjoy the victory Konami (and Kojima Productions), you deserve this award with all the success in the world. HAIL KONAMI!!! LONG LIVE METAL GEAR!!!!

I knew this game would get game of the year it's too awesome! Also the reason I heard that MGS4 won't be coming to 360 is because at first it was even too big for a dual layered blu-ray disk. So they had to downgrade it a little. Think about that on a regular DVD which 360 uses. It would take about 5+ dvds to put the entire game on it. It's a shame too. Anyways I'm sick of you Xbox360 fanboys coming on to PS3 only disscusions that have nothing to do with 360 and start bashing it. Seriously I never go to 360 disscusions to just bash the 360. It's so irrelivant! Oh crap now I'm derailling the topic. Thanks guys. I really feel proud of myself.

you cant say gta 4 is the best for so many reasons. 1: the most selling game is not necessarily the best. 2: gta4 is multi platform nd mgs4 is exclusive so obviously its going to sell more copies. 3: just because u think gta4 is the best does not necessarily mean everyone has to agree with u. 4: the fan awards is coming sometime next year nd people have been voting. 5: the graphics in mgs4 is much better than that of gta 4. come on all videos are rendered in real time nd there is no difference btw cutscene and gameplay graphics. 6: the stroy line is much better nd even the gameplay is better. i could go on and on bt am sure u wont be convinced coz u hav already made up ur mind. dont get me wrong i like gta4 bt in my opinion its just an overated game that is liked by casual gamer because of the free roaming. nd once again GTA 4 IS OVERATED!!!

man, i should really give MGS4 a try. i played some of em on the PS2 and wasn't into it. but my friend who is the biggest metal gear fan i know says it's different, so i guess I'll give it a shot... eventually.

Okay. I get it. This game is GS game of the year. It's like movie critics telling us that, "Milk", (does ANYONE even know this movie?) is a quality movie....or several years ago that, "Broke Back mountain", deserve our interest......OMG! I respect GS, but again, this review is only a collective of subjective views. Take the, "GOTY" with a grain of salt. The consumer response and sales numbers of a game will ultimately decide the game of the year. If you search, GTAIV is the best selling game this year. Is it the best? The public will always satisfy the answer of the best, "movie", "show", "vehicle", "video game". Free market always wins.

Edot0 the reason why people are saying MGS4 might come to the 360 is because one of the producers openly stated that they were looking for ways to put it on the system. Go ahead and mark me for spam. I'm just telling you what I read.

Wow. Just reading the comments here and the Sony fanboys have been at work. There's a comment saying something like "Why don't they ever mention Metal Gear Online?" which has been marked as spam. I think that's hilarious. I've not played it and I know it's crap. It's been marked down by the fanboys without the person mentioning it giving any opinion of it. He could just as easily have said "It's the best part of the package imo". But he didn't say anything. And you automatically think that he's dissing it. Because you know that it's bollocks. Bravo.

Hmmm... So I couldn't tell you off the top of my head that the perfect focus on the immersive co-op in Left 4 Dead was one of the reasons why I liked it? And I couldn't tell you that walking out of Vault 101 and seeing the vast expanse of the wasteland for the first time was one of the most impressive and memorable things I've seen this year in gaming? Okay, so maybe I haven't played MGS4 yet and maybe there ARE some truly epic moments that I've yet to see... But don't tell me what I can and cannot think VanOrd. You're entering the realm of "stuck up my own ass" like you've never entered before. Am I the only one who thinks that Gamespot have a disturbing affection for Japanese games?

MGS4 had Game of the Year in it's blood. It's an amazing game. My runner-up would be Braid, personally. I think it defines a 2D plat-former taking an original approach.

JimmeCata, I'm just curious if you played the game or if your going by what you were told about the game? I would assume from your comments that you have played this game, however then again you never know these days. I respect your opinion however strongly disagree especially when it comes to the cut scenes, if your involved at all, or care about the Metal Gear Series, not only do you not mind the cut scenes in MGS4 you welcome them....

jimmecata- yeah, an end to a 20 year series deserves the cinematic, long cutscenes.

If I ever get a PS3, this is the first game I'll get. Looks amazing and I knew it would win and I'm glad it did.

Wow. This GOTY competition was biased from the begining. I mean, take a look at the special achievement winners. Best voice acting? It was ridiculously cheesy, Best story? Umm no. How about something more down to earth than super soldiers fighting in giant robots, and a 60-something hero who's still insanely active for his age. Yeah I know all about that "advanced aging" disease too. Best graphics technology? That award definitely should have been taken by Crysis: Warhead. The other ones may be up for debate, but not that one. Also, they adressed the "I play it as much as I watch it " issue in the video, but for me, they didn't give a good answer, all they gave was an excuse. Do I really want a 45 minute cutscene in a GAME?

yes! this game is fantastic and definitely in my top ten of all time. every ps3 owner needs to play this game to experience what the ps3 is truly capable of. best ps3 game so far. congrats to hideo and konami and thanks for the memories!

i think everyone agrees that Snake deserves this award. Awsome year filled with a lot of out standing games, can't wait to see what 09 has in store for us ;)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I will be critcized for this but, I spit at MGSF 4. Some reasons; it's only on PS3; worst console, it's main character; Solid Snake, is older than my grandfather, you get to use giant "rays" to fight in like some kind of gundam crap. Gears of War 2 deserved this award, it is MILLLIONS of times more fun with cover, and the ability toi rip your enemies to pieces with a CHAINSAW, I would like to see MGSF 4 do that. BAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Konami sucks!

ah no suprise, what a game it was.

As a big big Metal Gear Solid fan I am very happy that gamespot got it right (IMO). I believe that Metal Gear has been a defining series for video games in general and throughout this game I was glued to everything going on screen, it also had me emotionally hooked to each and every character, even Liquid Ocelot. When I met Kojima in San Diego at Comic Con earlier this year that was a great moment for me to tell him how much I appreciated his work and dedication to the Metal Gear Series, after playing MGS4 that moment (meeting Kojima) means even more to me. Everyone should experience this game.....

MGS4 game of the year definitely. Playing Fallout 3 right now, it is a good game, but just lacking something that MGS4 has. I guess since MGS4 was the continuation of the whole story, it made it more of a enjoyable experience. For me I brought my PS3 because of it, just to see the end of the story.

I played it loved it and was gona be insanley angry should it not win game of the year since it kept me playing and kept me hooked with the story i havnt played MGS since first one and this did amazing job will be awhile before anyone realses another game like it Nicely done.
