Best of 2008 Game of the Year

*spoiler* mgs4 the moment that it hints you get to pilot rex just before it happens. right then i knew it was leading to a show down of the metal gears. i had been waiting for it for years. it was definatly the most anticipation ive ever had gaming. this game should get an oscar nomination

YES! This is good isn't it. MGS4 truly is the game of the year and in my opinion the best game of all time.

I guess this was in the bag before the year was out.

MGS4 deserved this, their explainations of why it's the game of the year are dead on. I agree with everything they said. I find it strange that GeoW2 wasn't even nominated, I feel like it should have been.

Playing through this game once isn't enough. There's so mmuch detail here that there will be treats that you've missed out on.

Can any of the Xbox fan stop critics on the game .. stop saying GS for to fanboyism or "Head up the burn award" .. it doesn't related , it so preposterous .. They really judge on the game from all gameplay, story, and technical.. everything is perfect for MGS4 and no any technical issues or story weak or gameplay suks that made this game bad... If u really play then u will truly enjoy the game rather than just talk but no action... I also shock when GOW2 was not nominated but no choice... This is GS decision and wat i read from other book also gave GOW2 9/10 but MGS4 only get 9.5/10 . there is not much different but since they made this choice we have to acknowledge their decision and follow the list.. So from all the list only MGS4 stands out as the most improve game from the previous sequel ... so stop bad and just agree with it .... MGS4 and Kojima I salute U !!!

i reckon it was totaly rigged just like most things with PS3 fallout was a great game and so was no more heroes this was another lame thing by sony just like what they did to ninja gaiden 2 damn uber awsome game sony paid abit more so it wasnt advertised instead MGS4 was put infront of it wtf

Played GTA4 and MGS 4 both, and a few other games but none came really close to MGS 4. Incredible graphics, both in game and during cut scenes (heck both are essentially the same). Great story which really gets you emotionally involved and really make you put in hours at a time to find out what happens next, ignoring the one hr gaming, 15 min rest that they advise between acts. Voice was awesome. *Spoiler warning* and yes, the epic boss battles which gets you thinking on your feet instead of skillful button-mashing. How to beat vamp using the ____ and how to find crying wolf's / laughing octopus's location accurately with the aid of the omnipotent _____. And yeah, my favorite moment of the game was during Rex vs Ray. Man, they could just vary a few more mechs and locations and it could even stand as a great game on its own. So many fresh and exciting experiences that putting the controller down was impossible (unless of course, it ran out of batteries) Completed this game 4 times, obtaining the Big Boss Emblem (anyone here a trophy junkie?) on my last run. Although it conditions seem impossible, it is easily overcome due to the excellent gameplay that keeps you going and going and going.... as compared to the 30% complete I got on GTA4 and was too bored to continue. I enjoyed GTA3 and vice city... but it was too much of the same thing on gta4 ) I could go on all day about how great the game is and I'm sure those that completed it would agree. As for the rest who have not, what are you waiting for? It is truly the best game yet and is a shame for any avid gamer not to at least try it. MGS4 all the way!

Hell Yeah!!! The staff at Gamespot.com actually gets it! Everything they said in this video was so dead on acurate, that I was pumping my fist while I was watching this video! Metal Gear Solid 4 was clearly the best video game released this year, by far, and they explained the reasons why brillantly! I can tell by this video review, that the staff here on Gamespot.com actually takes gaming seriously (unlike other fanboy sites like gametrailers.com, who didn't even have MGS4 as a nominee for best story in a video game award this year.) I'm glad that I made the switch and became a Gamespot member!

mgs 4 definitly deserves this ! games like gears of war and others are trully great as well but they can never math mgs ! though i dont get why braid and nhl are nominated. i dont say they are bad games but not good enough for the game of the year. kojima ruls !!!

I do think Little Big Planet and Gears of War 2 should've been nominated, but I'm sure it wouldn't make a difference. Metal Gear Solid 4 is, by far, the best game of 2008.

Well if it's any consulation for the Nintendo fans out there, if you wanna celebrate the success of Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series, how about a four player battle with Snake on Super Smash Bros Brawl if you're into it. Maybe next time the Wii can do is to really push the limits of gameplay, visual, audio and replay value like Super Mario Galaxy.

dont get me wrong looks like an awesome game... bet i would enjoy it a lot... but ill stick with left 4 dead

What the hell is Braid, NHL 09? Why isn't Stalker Clear Sky even on there. I'm sure its better than a 2d side scroller. MGS4.. Come on. There were better games, Gamespot..

why werent littlebigplanet and gears2 even nominated??? And how can you compare Braid to a series of extremely high production value games? Its like comparing an independent film to Hollywood blockbusters. Is that too hard to see Gamespot Editors???

ok this game really deserved its game of the year award and i think that you would kinda expect it cuz it won in every other competition like best graphics and all that but i didn't i though of it the best cuz it is the best i played it and finished it 10 times with each difficulty and Ive never finished a game 10 times like i did with MGS4

Everything about MGS4 says that its the greatest, even the menu. The cut scenes weren't long to me. Because I was interested in the game's world and all the little stories that all lead to the events and characters involvement in the game's plot.

Gamespot has just been deleted from my bookmarks. How much did Sony give you crooks?

Most PS3 nerds would disagree with you and nominate Gametrailers over Gamespot... or at the very least give Gamespot a tie with the majority of gaming sites for not giving the PS3 enough attention because 50% or more of gaming sites are Xbots according to PS3 nerds.

Wow..even though I've never been an MGS fan but I have to admit that MGS4 is one of the greatest games ever made. You don't have to play it to have fun.....*applauds for Konami*

I have this game from 15 jun and i finished it and i can say that is the best game,the most memorable moment for me was when snake was into the microware tunnel!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Glad to see MGS4 winning. That is an incredible game chock full of awesome, epic moments. It is definitely a must play for gamers in general, not just Metal Gear fans. I am disappointed that Little Big Planet didn't at least get nominated, though. How can a game that innovated not get nominated over others like NHL 08, The World Ends With You, and Burnout Paradise? That made me scratch my head.

MGS4 just won the GOTY, and yet Fallout 3 is still at least 3.141592654 times better.

im not a mgs fan but i loved mgs4!!!

why do ppl complain about MGS4 being a moive, the cutscenes are too long o boo hoo. i havent play MSG4 but ive played every other MGS to death and guess what by pressing start you can skip the cutscenes. really how can you complain about something you can completely avoid? learn to press start is that really so hard? with that being said i voted for fallout that game was awesome since i havent played MGS4

Everyone with a PS3 should own that game,and this is coming from someone who owns only a 360 lol.But I played through it at my friend's house and it's amazing,for me it was between this game and GOW2(which you have to admit,no matter what console you own,is BAAMMM!!!!),but sadly,not everyone who owns a PS3 has this game,not nearly.What's going on?!

Why do I see only a black screen...there are tiny 2 mm lines on the bottom and the right where I can see possibly video..but its like there is a big black box over the video...

i would have loved to see it on xbox 360 just to see a REAl grapghics comparison between a ps3 pure blood , and a 360 game, but as GS said it was confirmed that the other plataform its coming out is IPHONE

Never had a doubt. I truly enjoyed this game from beginning to end. i'll celebrate by finishing it again, for the 5th time. .

i wasnt convinced that mgs4 was that great a game after playing the previous games but gamespot convinced me otherwise

I haven't played any of the other nominees, so I won't comment on whether MGS4 deserved GOTY or not, but I did enjoy the game greatly myself. That being said, I found myself getting frustrated with the improbable storyline even though I have played the previous games in the series multiple times. So, while I can see newcomers to the series enjoying the gameplay, I can't imagine them liking the ridiculous cutscenes.
