it definately deserved it but no gears 2 should not have been there, i mean i love the game but the multiplayer is broken, everyother game is laggy, the ranking system is retarted, the matchmaking system is as well, there is also a number of annoying glitches, like how you pick an invisable shield with a shotgun, that makes me so mad, you cant see what isnt protected and have a shotgun
alright, i don't have a PS3, i won a X360, but I have to say, MGS4 is awesome, just pretty sad that was a PS3 exclusive. but as some guy said it down there, Gears of War 2 should be in the list... isn't the best game ever... but it's really better than *i'm sorry fans, don't blame on me* fallout 3(i mean when you go for GoW2 its a 3PS and F3 its a RPG) and even i not played, nut by the videos, images and other opinions, Gears2 is definaly better than Resistance 2(even this is a great game)
MGS all the whey and before all you MGS haters and xbot’s complain PLAY THE GAME!! Seriously play it. It has the best story Line have ever played in a game. I had a lump in my thought at the end. Think of GTA4 times 10!!
I say only that console games are more easy to make because u already know what the characteristics the player machine will have and with that in mind one can customize and adjust the graphics and gameplay at giving players better experience with your product. But when one makes a computer game that ROCKS so hard as FALLOUT 3 is truly remarkable .
DOESN'T deserve the GOTY award not when was in this competition against masterpieces like FALLOUT 3. Lol nice one fallout 3 sucked as much as mgs 4 if not more Can i say butthurt xbot ?
No disrespect to mister Kojima , but this game S@#$S, the split screen action/movie that this guyz are talking is a bunch of B@#$ S@#$%. It works in movies/tv series like "24" TV Show, but in a game is a major turn down because the gamer can't enjoy both because his up most attention is to the action he's playing. One thing that I liked about this game is the perfect integration of movies into the game play. Another thing that bothered me was the exclusivity of this game towards the PS, but at the end i can understand that because of the global situation, BUT i didn't expected from the Gamespot to bow it's had to money .All and all this game ,in my opinion , DOESN'T deserve the GOTY award not when was in this competition against masterpieces like FALLOUT 3.
MGS4 is a great game with lots of options to do what you want. But the level design is extremely comfined, basically an one way ticket. The jungle does not feel like jungle, the city felt like corridors. Shadow mosses is fine the way it is, cannot change a classic. The battles are not epic, the enemies can be counted. I donot think PS3 is up to what Kojima had in mind. Kojima wanted freedom, but PS3 doesnot deliever. MGS4 game of the year? No, hell no, it did not deliever what the initial game designs and concepts Kojima had on the drawing board.
shocking! a ps3 exclusive won game of the year on gamespot beating all those 360 games? and gamespot has been accused many times of backing up all microsoft/360 affiliated things! anyways im glad MGS4 won this award, nothing is like metal gear solid ever, all those FPS looks and plays the same from the first time they are invented (w3d doom half life etc) but MGS encompasses several exciting gameplay strategies no other game has achieved. and i like how gamespot editors backuped the award by explaining to all gaming morons why MGS deserve GOTY08. its still amusing to see that lots of short minded gamers will still argue why their favorite didnt won instead, as if they didnt understand a single word of what the editors said. Congratulations Konami & the whole Kojima Team!
If MGS 4 was 1st person and without movie cut scenes , well then yes it would be ground braking and worth mentioning. who cares about the story , the player should be the story not some developers dream to control where you roam and who you should shoot . Far cry 2 and Fallout 3 beat it in 2008.
I personally believe that GTA:IV should of won, there should be no game in the world where the is a spilt screen with a fight screen and gameplay and also towards the ending I don't care how awesome it is. that looking annoying
MGS4 looks like a good game, I can't say that this game dosn't deserve it when I havn't played it since I dont have a PS3, I'm just glad it wasn't GTA4 since it won on other GOTY.
wow i cant believe gears of war 2 is not on the list. I mean, MGS 4 is the best, but gears 2 should have deff been on the list. I dont understand how resistance 2 beat gears 2 on the list. I played both games, and i have to say gears 2 is better than resistance 2. Well IMO, gears 2 isn't the best, but its definitely up there.
I love this series, I loved the game and I respect their choice. However, it's not my personal favorite because I didn't get addicted to it after finishing. Once I was done with the campaign, I immediately restarted playing on the hard difficulty on the next day, only to stop playin on the second act and haven't touched it since July. I will go back eventually (+100), GoW 2 ( +/-70 hours), Fifa (about 100 hrs), and SF2T HDR (I've already played 1000 matches online). So yeah, the GOTY award can be personal, or simply argued in the way that best suits one's choice--and for that reason, I salute Gamespot for doing their best to validate their choice.
MGS4 brings back bad memories for me. I'm glad it won game of the year, though. It has no real flaws. (except for the fact the game manually switches your weapon after cutscenes) the controls, graphics, camera, gameplay, AI, everything was perfect. (lengthy cutscences are hardly a flaw seeing as how you can SKIP them. *gasp*)
MGS4 is....... ummmm it's........ don't think in know a word that can be used to describe a game as amazing as this. I mean it's more than just a game, it's like magnificence concentrated into a disc, Hideo Kojima: Creator of Digital Masterpieces
It's just like critically acclaimed movies. Critics love games like MGS4(as do i) because of who they are, and what they do. Alot of people HATE critically acclaimed movies, same with games. It's just opinion, so don't get mad.
I can perfectly understand that because of its nature, MGS4 is not a product that appeals to everyone. But it represents a remarkably designed and delivered "game" that constitutes a real evolution for the industry. I think that it has that particular (maybe, if we are to push it further) "historical weight" for videogames (and multimedia-entertainment in general). I am sorry but I couldn't perceive the same breakthrough attitude and the same daring spirit in Fallout 3, Resistance 2 or GTA4. Yes, all three deliver a great gaming experience but they aren't sufficiently innovative... In this sense, bravo MGS4! Oh and one more thing: reading through the comments posted here I couldn't help but have a weird sensation of deja vu. So many of the criticisms related to MGS4's cinematic style I already heard in 2002 when MGS2 came out. It's been 6 years already yet it seems that some people still cannot appreciate it.
Personally, I think Resistance 2 should have won, it is such a fun game overall. I have MGS4 and i don't really like it that much, the cut scenes bore me and the gameplay isn't all that fun.
Kudos to Cardoka for speaking the truth here and not being some fanboy. The Xbox 360 is good okay. It's technologically not as advanced but XboxLive is increadible okay. There are some games I would want to get an Xbox 360 for like fable 2 but I'm happy with my PS3. It just ticks me off when people just simply state facts about the 2 systems and then 360 fanboys say that it's totally biased because it makes the PS3 look better 0_o Maybe that means something boys and girls.
I think MGS4 really did deliver a truly phenomenal gaming experience, and I'm glad it got Game of the Year. Yeah, Fallout 3 was really great, and so were all the other games people voted for, but this game really does stand out as the most amazing game this year.
Cutscenes, cinematic.....these are good for games? I thought gameplay was the point of playing games? I, as a longtime gamer, hate lengthy cutscenes where you sit as a passive observer. Keep games where you, the gamer, must play the game, not watch video and excessive drama.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is game of the year thats it. if u wanna critisize it goto some other site. It is a perfect decision of perfect people. And XBOX-360 can never play this game. just like ps2 was leading xbox. PS3 doin the same. Microsoft are software makers. they know nothing about hardware. Sony got a history of producing best hardwares. They invented flat screen, HD screen, hometheatre, BlueRay-Disc etc. i've heard people saying 360 got better graphics in this and that game. My brother use both of them (PS3, 360) on HD-TV. You'll get your answers. And dont forget to use home theatres to get the best of PS3. Even that microsoft guy (Cardkoda) below is admitting some part. But the real thing is "Graphics" man.
Jon-X93 I don't understand, are you agreeing or disagreeing with me, or did you just read 1 sentence then post your comment? I stated the PS3 was more powerful and that MGS4 wouldn't use EITHER system to it's limits. I stated multiple disks could be used so you don't have to compress information. I stated the gameplay didn't interest me based on the previous installments in the MGS series. I didn't say that MGS4 would DEFINITELY be the same, I just assumed it probably would be, and maybe I was wrong. And about saying the 360's power is insufficient, that's completely wrong. There were several news articles about xbox and konami saying that the 360's power is by long way sufficient, but the problem of multiple disks may put consumers off the product. And there were also the sony representative commenting on konami deciding over whether to keep it PS3 exclusive, and he said it seemed unlikely to keep it on PS3 only, especially with the 360's rising success and the demand for MGS4 on Xbox 360. And please could you read this comment fully this time. Thanks.
the right game won this one I was in tears by the end of this game it brought back old memories and then made new ones. all in all it deserves this award. I hope everyone gets to play it you won't be disappointed
