Best of 2008 Game of the Year

I didn't actually like this game,I have been playing all the MGSs and to be honest I didn't like the shoot em' up style the game.Like I know Snake is like 80 or something in this but the fact that when you're shooting he walks so slow and the crosshair is so f***ed up like 4 dots I think the stealth style was brilliant and so was the storyline but I think it flopped itself on the shooter style.I think Left 4 Dead or GTA IV should have won it.Left 4 Dead because they put like 5 years work into this and came up with a new "AI Director" that will obviously be put into many other game in the fututre and why wasn't little big planet nominated?That game was awesome!!!

This game is so sick, although they should have maybe regrouped the cinematics together to give longer streams of play, cause a some moments, you played 30 seconds and pouf! a cut scene. repeat 5 times. other that that, one of the best games ever. oh, and to you Xbox fanboys who say MGS4 sucks and you secretly want it to port to the xbox, well i'm pretty sure i won't happen. Like Jon-X93 told shaved_sheep, the size of the games won't allow the port. on ps3, it takes almost all the disk (about 40-50 gb) which would occupy 3-4 xbox disk, and it uses i think 6 of the 7 processors the ps3 has, while the 360 only has 3 or 4, so give it up, don't get your hopes up, cause you'll only be disappointed.

houldn't MGS4 have won an Oscar? its a movie right, since u would have had to of played the first 3 to know wtf was going on the the 20 minute cut scenes. lucky this is just there opinion and now great prize is being given away...i miss jeff

I haven't finished this or played much into it but firstly, I'm not surprised to find it labeled as G.O.T.Y 2008. As little as I did play of it I already want to finish it and already absolutely agree it deserved this title. Well done Hideo and Konami, you've earned it! Especially with how tough the competition is/has been!

I could have told you that the day I played it. Easliy the best of 2008, one of the greatest of all time.

Why does it take you to certain game pages when you wish to view the best of awards? Fallout 3 on the 360 is the most viewed game because of the Game of the Year award movie. Does this not cause some sort of missrepresentation in the stats at the end of the year???

MGS4 fully overhyped. i dont realy pay attention to ps3. personally i think fallout 3 should have the title.

MGS4 deserved this, All the mgs series rocked! Hideo Kojima is an amazing idealist. I still was routing for 'The world ends with you' Knowing it wouldnt stand a chance against MGS4, to be honest MGS4 was obviously going to win, so they should of made like 2nd best game of 2008 or something lol.

even with it is rubbish story and the lack of love, ( cause myrel turned to a biatch ) mgs4 is the game of the year, but frankly i enjoyed gow2 more , and i dont know where the hell is dead space, which in my opinion a truly next gen game, this game is so evil that it literally will hunt your dreams

Yeah, at least somebody found MGS4 better than the overrated GTAIV (Gametrailers ... I'm so disappointed in them). MGS has been great from the beginning and has never let us down.

I was totally voting for fallout 3 but after seeing this I have to say MGA looked really good.

Some people are treating as if this is the end of the world. lol i dont have a ps3 but i could care less if MGS4 won. ill be honest lots of 08 games sucked. MGS4 was the only true game that had some effort put into it and i dont even have it. stop complaining and wait for next year for new results for a chance of ur system of choice to win.

well braid is nominated for best platformer NHL for best sport i mean u cant have all shooters dominating the nominees i mean xbox ot left4dead well kinda since itz pc well gears 2 is having issues and itz really the same as 1 whereas in resistance 2 itz a big leap from itz predesecor

Shaved sheep : I have both games, and MGS4 is WAY better in term of its own values. From graphic, sound, gameplay, story, etc, it kills L4D. Yet, these are two different games, and I enjoy L4D too.

Oh, and another thing: A lot of the MGS fanboys are saying "If you haven't played it, then you're an ignorant fool". Right. Let me slap you with your own logic here. If you HAVEN'T played all of the other games on this list, then you cannot have an opinion on the subject either. Stop telling me I'm ignorant for not playing it and believing Left 4 Dead is more worth my money when you have done the exact same thing in opposite. i.e - believing that MGS4 was more worth your money when you haven't bought Left 4 Dead.

So Gamespot is owned entirely by Sony now. I've written three comments in this thread: One was about the NEWS that Konami's producers were looking at ways to get MGS4 onto the 360. This was a news item I had read on a website. Something I'd read. I didn't write the fact, I borrowed it from another source. And because you refuse to hear it, you marked it for spam. One was about the irony of the fanboys who mark down comments that mention thier insecurites. If I simply mentioned that you don't get Left 4 Dead on the PS3 I'd get marked down. But If I said you don't get Resistance 2 on a 360 I'd get the thumbs up. The fanboys are fanboys because they aren't listening to any other opinions, but if simply imposing your will at the slightest hint of misinformation is what the modern fanboy is, I pity you sincerely. The other was about my displeasure with Kevin VanOrd telling me what I can and cannot think. And it was marked for spam. I merely described the moments that I have enjoyed in gaming this year. And the fanboys marked me down. And what's even stupider is that neither of the games I mentioned are 360 exclusives. You must have to be so paranoid and insecure to qualify as a fanboy these days. Yeah sure, it's really pathetic of me to come on this and defend myself even though no-one wanted or asked me to. But understand that I'm defending myself and my opinions and not my 360. Glad it was MGS4, I got it a few days after release with GTAIV and never looked back. IV was great for but for someone who played all the way from GTA1, it was rather disappointing. Dont get me wrong, the game itself is a technological marvel but the story did not interest me much (ooh, im here looking for someone, tried the yellow pages mate?). I personally think critics gave it high scores because it was so hyped and well known, it would have been damning to the GTA brand if it fell short of under 95%. The online also was pathetic, lvl 1 pistol newb outguns say a level 5 with an M4? Think not my son... MGS4 on the otherhand is also a technological marvel but delivers IMO. Having never played an MG game before, I loved it! Some cutscenes dragged, I admit it straight, but the story-telling it self was marvellous, just as good as the cut-scenes. I still think on how advanced this game is in its own way such as little things like Snake punching his back when he's been crouched a while to the overall great graphical presentation of it. MGO is also a great game within MGS4 and is a huge component of its popularity on the PS3 - games are always filled, rooms are chocka-block and the uniqueness with team sneaking, special deathmatch etc. are great, along with the usual favourites such as deathmatch, team deathmatch and base. Would have been disappointed if MGS4 did not get best game of the year as it bloody deserved it, even if some critics damned it due to the cut-scenes, I think you either love it or hate it and I think most people who OWN it rather than having PLAYED it love it :) Just my two pence (more like a pound ^_^) Mnia786

Fail to impress you as a next generation game? What are you smoking!? This game is way better looking than any other console game out there, and every PC game barring Crysis of course. You are obviously a 360 fan and just jealous. Just break down and buy every system like I did. Then you can play all the great games.

my opinion; best 08 game is GTA 4. Best story line is MGS4

MGS4 is a funny video game, the enemy are stupid. like u put out a playboy magazine and they get distracted.

I haven't played MGS4. I just don't think that I can get past that olive green Maxi Pad he wears on his forehead.. He just looks so damn stupid. And the graphics fail to impress me as being next gen. IMO, Fallout 3 shoulda won. It's platform neutral and an amazing game.

I'm really glad this game got game of the year, i remember waiting for this game to come out because of the delays, but i know kojima really put a lot of heart into this one, and the metal gear series has always done me good.

They dont even mention the online part of metal gear. ITs really deep and shouldnt be looked over

Unsurprising but I can't complain. Unlike Time Magazine's GOTY (which always translates to "most hyped game this year"), Gamespot seems to put some thought into the selection.

MGS4 rules untill MGS5 comes out!!!
