@jynxten: Yes! That game was so difficult... I used to play it with a friend, good memories!

@prodigy_69: I love Little Big Planet for many reasons but would never call the gameplay top notch. Those floaty physics and odd layer jumps *shudders*

And coop needs a revamp with the off-screen time pops. Game leaders can get very annoying exploiting this flaw in multiplayer.

Thanks for this summary. Unfortunately as you say, there seem to be less and less local coop games these days. It's a shame if you have kids that you want to play together with - and after 10 Lego games you do get tired of them. Luckily there are some Indie games that still use it, but all the modern "AAA" (*cough* *cough*) games leave it out. I can only think of FarCry 4 as a recent one, but that is limited(?) and maybe not something for younger kids.

@rustiax: Return to Arms needs a sequel.

Champions of Norrath & RtA is part of the EverQuest universe, with SnowBind giving it a Diablo feel. I'd welcome a port at the very least :(

I am old school I suppose, but try digging out these old gems:

Contra/Probotector (Series)

Bubble Bobble

Secret of Mana

Goof Troop

Super smash TV

Lifeforce (Gradius 2)

Chip n' Dale rescue rangers

Snake Rattle 'n Roll

Zombies ate my neighbor

Dare I say Ikari warriors as well :?

Previously mentioned, beat em ups as turtles 2 and 4, final fight, double dragon, battle toads etc. as well of course

You simply can't beat the 16-bit era for co-op couch games, these new titles can't touch them for camaraderie

@Microsteve: Not sure where you get that idea, typical nostalgia obsessed individual, there are plenty of modern co-op games that offer as much camaraderie as things from the 16 bit era... don't kid yourself, maybe you're just getting duller in your old age...? Because it's not the games... though much of the AAA industry has really gone to the dogs... there are a ton of fun, smaller, co-op games.

How about a couch competitive list now?

Edit: I love how Mary is way into couch multiplayer games.. I can see why she would get lots of people wanting to play with her.. :p. Its just a joke/compliment. You are awesome Mary.

I enjoyed Army of Two as a good couch co-op game. Actually, I thought it worked rather well as a couch co-op game. I was surprised LBP didn't make the list as well.

L4D 1 & 2

Rayman

Gears of War

I've played & finished these three in couch CoOp.

Borderlands 2 & RE 5 however seem better in alone on in online coop because the split screen takes so much from Borderland, & the camera is wacky in RE5 in coop.
