Contender 2 for the PS1

User Rating: 7.4 | Victory Boxing Challenger PS
Contender 2 rocks your PS1 with some of the best boxing action you’ll ever find. Sure it isn’t EA’s Fight Night Round 3, but this game has the core elements of a sensational game down. Now for the game play, this is one of the best boxing games that I have ever played. Not only have they configured the bottons correctly, but they have found a way to make a boxing game about more than pounding away at another sweaty guy. Square and Triangle control the upper punches, while X and O control the bottom punches. You can unleash unrealistic combos without struggling to hard to master them. You also have special punches that can be unleashed to cause major damage, knock the opponent off balance or do some other bodily harm. As soon as you start up the game you are faced with two options. You can either do the story or practice in an exhibition match. As far as the story mode goes, you slowly work your way up from fifteenth place in the world ranking and fight your way to the top. Along the way you will have the option to learn new combos, special punches, and increase your overall stats. As you fight your way through you will unlock more characters. As far as graphics and sound go, they are both surprisingly good for a PS1 game. Instead of attempting to look realistic, the creators decided to go with a more cell shaded look that doesn’t work with most games. Unfortunately, there isn’t a soundtrack but the announcer and the fight sounds sound as authentic as possible. The game offers over eighteen different characters total. You start by selecting from eight at the start of story mode. Then, as you continue to work your way up the ranks, you unlock the other ten or more characters. This gives you plenty of content to unlock. Plus, you can play the story mode with all of the characters to gain all of the special punches and combos. Overall, Contender 2 is a serious contender for the best boxing game on the PS1. It is definatly the best boxing game in my book. If you just have a PS1 and you want a boxing game, this is the way to go.
