great boxing simulation that sadly suffered from obscurity

User Rating: 9 | Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit PS2
There are not many boxing games around and even fewer good ones so the choices are very limited. Victorious Boxers: Ippo's Road to Glory (based on the manga Hajime no Ippo) in 2001 was ahead of of its time as far as boxing simulations were concerned. It was the first boxing simulator to effectively use bobbing weaving motion and a greater emphasis on footwork. The footwork alone adds greater depth because angles and distance must be put into consideration when attacking or defending. Despite all of this, Fight Night series got the lion's share of attention of boxing fans.

Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit improves on the original in most ways. The graphics, while not mind-blowing, have improved a great deal and the characters look more like its manga counterparts. They also move more naturally as well. The already impressive roster size in the original has been double to over 60 boxers, some with unique attributes and abilities. The game mechanics have improved in most ways, like the way momentum influnces damage magnified by counters and more tracking with jabs. This game is not without flaws though. Some special attacks and (to a certain extent) body blows are overpowered. The new blocking ability is not that reliable, and seems more like a afterthought. Like VB1, VB2 is bare bones when it comes to game modes. There is only a vs. mode, a tournament mode, and story mode. There are no diversions like a lot of games have these days, just the boxing action. Considering the depth the game's fighting engine has to offer, it's a shame that there is no training mode, making it even less accessible to those new to the game. For those who want a solid boxing simulation, this the game for you. Those who play the game long enough will appreciate the game effectively simulates the intricacies of the sport. At the starting price of $10 at local stores (much cheaper than VB1 at the time), there are hardly any games that offer quality at that price. Unfortunately, this game is hard to find because of its so obscure and small quantities of copies available. Scour the bargain bins and the Internet to get your hands on it.
