Bring peace to this land

User Rating: 9.5 | Senjou no Valkyria PS3
I have played many, many games over the years. A majority of them are action platformers. With the exception of the Kessen series, I dislike strategy games. This game, however, is the exception to the rule. I loved the game from the start to the finish. It wasn't perfect, and I can recall turning off the games after several losses. But overall this game just lifted your spirits.

The graphics are probably the most unique aspect of this game. Everyone is pushing for fully realistic, 3D graphics. But instead this game goes with 3D models that look like anime watercolor. Its a real treat to watch. It just looks... human. A majority of the cutscenes play out like a visual novel. Simple but beautiful.

The gameplay is challenging, and yet intuitive and engaging. I love being able to take control of my troops movements and attacks. It makes the strategy aspect stay interesting. And you will rarely be able to win the stage with a straightforward approach.

Prejudice, war, politics, and love are all touched on. The story may be light-hearted, but it is not childish. I often thought about the past, especially WWII (which this game alludes to). It also made me think about situation this country is going through now. You can enjoy this story as long as you aren't some rotten, cynical human being.

The cast is lively and varied. The main cast has their set of real flaws and strengths. They don't get along perfectly. There are many scenarios where the team squabble about how to handle the outstanding odds. There are 5 main characters (later six) featured in the storyline. But you can chose a custom squad of about 11 or 12 other soldiers. Each one is unique. The squad types are tank, scout, engineer, shocktrooper, lancer, and sniper. You can switch your extra soldiers out whenever you please.

The game is lengthy. I'll tell you this- There are many games I don't bother to finish. But I beat this game from beginning to end. I leveled every class to max level. And by the time I finished the game I had logged 68 hours. That is not including the few stages that I lost. (I would factor a total of about 10 more hours on to that total) You don't have to invest that much time into the game if you don't wish. But its there if you want to put forth the effort.

I can easily rank this as one of my favorite Playstation 3 games. Probably the best of my entire collection with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 4. It was worth every penny I spent on it. If they ever make a sequel to Valkyria Chronicles on PS3, I will be one of the first in line!
