Horror I enjoyed more then I thought I would.

I would like to say that I don't really enjoy horror genre at all. Take this into consideration while reading.

I played this with my girlfriend and we both liked it a lot in the end. I was the one doing actual playing while she was covering herself with the blanky for the most part. :) Despite that, it was an interesting experience that couples can share as there are a lot of mystery and puzzles involved that can be talked over during the game. I didn't expect to enjoy the story as much as I did since I generally find them very weak. However, good writing and dialogues, plot twists and most importantly meaningful choices that influence the game throughout make sure this was a unique experience.

Characters are teens and most of the have clear flaws. It's very easy to get caught like some and hating others. However, be prepared to change your mind as some of the character development is really good. During the game you will experience playing with all of them and their interaction will help mold the story and it's conclusion. This game can literally be finished with everyone either alive, dead or any other possible combination.

There is one particular instance I would like to commend as it shows a game design at it's best. ***Light spoilers ahead - if you want skip to the next paragraph*** - One of the characters can get bitten (not by zombie just to be clear) and rest of the group, clearly influenced by modern horror tropes, assume the worst. They have no knowledge of such things but their assumption clouds their judgement. I loved that part. There are many more clever bits and pieces throughout the game. However, as this is a horror genre, it's best not to analyze to deep. Just enjoy the ride.

Voices were done by all star cast, such as Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, and they are great. They reactions seem genuine for the most part with maybe one or two exceptions. Even more important in horror genre is music as it's a driving tool in setting an atmosphere. I'm happy to report that it did a good job of setting a tone and building suspense. On the other hand sound effects didn't impress me. They were mostly decent but there were some let-downs - especially in the scenes with weapons, where sound was just laughable.

Graphic is great; very realistic with great motion capturing. As plot takes place during night it's only natural that dark pallet of colors is highly prevalent. This dark theme is complimented by very impressive light and shadow play as most scenes are lit only by lantern, torch or some other gadget held by character you control. In conclusion locations are good, effects are very good, and characters are great. The only shame is that PS4 is not more powerful. Oh well, there is always 5th gen. :)

This game provides unique experience that can be shared with others while boosted by the fact that your choices really matter - something a lot of games try to do but fail. With a lot of collectibles in shape of clues and tokens, several mysteries to uncover and multiple different endings this game can be even replayed. Especially after some time when you forget some of the details. Grade. 8/10.
