A Great Follow-up to the Amazing Ultima VII Series

User Rating: 9.3 | Ultima VIII: Pagan (3.5" Disk) PC
This game drew a lot of criticism for its many jumping sequences when it was new. Personally, while I wasn't crazy about them either, or at least the amount of them in the game, I always thought this issue drew a lot more ire from Ultima fans than it deserved.

The fact is, the game improved the already excellent graphics of the Ultima VII series, continued the story and was great fun to play. I loved it myself. Everything good from the previous Ultima was here in spades. What was not to love? Once again, I was the Avatar and so completely immersed in this game that I would talk about it often at work, telling friends, "I AM the Avatar!" They of course, thought I was crazy but such is the life of heroes saving the medieval worlds of times gone by.

You can still find these games on eBay and I'd highly recommend the Ultima Collection in particular as it contains them all. They are MS-DOS games however so whether they work with DOSBox (available on Sourceforge - Google for it) or not is something I am not certain of.

There is a program called Exult, which requires you to have the original game resouces for Ultima VII to install and which is said to run it well in Windows. This I have been meaning to try myself along with DOSBox to replay these gems. As usual, so many games... so little time... But someday I do hope to return and see the land of Britania again where I enjoyed so many adventures and so much fun.
