Tron 2.0 is a sadly overlooked game that does the film justice while being a great game on its own merits.

Tron 2.0 is an interesting game, while it relies on many FPS conventions, it uses the Tron license well enough that it becomes a unique game with some great mission design, great graphics, and an interesting story.

If you liked the film Tron, you are going to love Tron 2.0. The universe looks just like the film, and although the engine may be dated, this means the game looks oddly fresh even 5 years after its release. The game also makes use of Tron's clever "world inside of a computer" thing, with lots of great anthropomorphic versions of processes, programs, and so much more.

The gameplay is standard FPS fare with some light RPG elements, as you can "Update" your version number and increase your abilities as well as "install" special abilities. A somewhat Deus-Ex type system, although it does feel dumbed down due to the linear level design. The most annoying part of the gameplay in truth is the difficulty- even on easy you can get de-rezzed in a single hit and it can be a pain to get corrupted files and still fight. Otherwise everything is solid and the level design is great, with some interesting puzzles.

The icing on the cake though has to be the multiplayer. There are 2 kinds of multiplayer- discs and light cycle races; just like the movie. The disc portion has you running around strange but frentic arenas trying to derez opponents, unlike most deathmatch games though you don't respawn. Some maps are insane and require a lot of skill to maneuver- some maps even let spectators screw around with settings to keep the still living players on their toes. Light Cycles play out just like the movie, but there are power ups and more maze like grids to spice things up. Pick your poison, but either way you'll have a barrel of fun with the multiplayer.

Despite some glitches, a steep difficulty and some disjointed aspects, Tron 2.0 is a wonderfully developed and awesome tribute to one of the greatest and most clever sci-fi fantasies of the 80's, if not ever. Sadly, the film and the game have one similarity that is a bit disappointing: They are both overlooked. Do yourself a favour, whether you are a fan of Tron or not, check this game out.
