Simulation=great, life=lacking

User Rating: 8.5 | Top Spin 4 X360
Top Spin 4 has wonderous gameplay. As it is the case that the series can never become truly realistic without the use of motion controllers, the feat that they have achieved through the conversion of the game to Xbox controller is simply stunning.

Despite this, there isn't much game to this game, or to put it more accurately, there isn't soul. Technically this game is perfect, with top notch production values. The career mode is lacking. Various attempts are made at drawing out some semblance of career progression, but players are ultimately lacking in personality. That there are no voices beyond umpires and coaches in game is a testament to the fundamental problem at the heart of this game.

When I create a spunky young go-getter who rises to become a tennis legend, I want to know them, their ambitions and feel some sort of connection. Instead I play po-faced tennis in po-faced tournaments against sanitised po-faced opponents.

Despite what this game lacks in player created narrative however, it makes up for with a true committment to realism. So close to greatness!
