Best in the series to this day.

User Rating: 9.5 | Tony Hawk's Underground PS2
The Tony Hawk series of games has always offered a fresh experience with detailed levels, insane moves, and addictive game play. Tony Hawk's Underground is no different. For the first time, the series has a real story including a major twist in the plot. Also for the first time, the star of the game isn't any of the big name pros. Rather, the star is the player who starts the game as an unknown skater in New Jersey. A few other noteworthy additions to the game include the Create-a-Trick mode and a whole new set of grinds performed by double tapping the triangle button. The levels are expansive and the lines are very well laid out. As opposed to newer TH games, such as THUG2 and THAW, the levels include many obstacles, yet they don't feel cluttered. The basic lines will carry players across ledges and benches, while experienced players will hit surfer boards, fences, wires, pools, and trees (yes trees) in a line. One other new addition is the ability to hop off your board and run around. This addition can be used (with some difficulty) to extend combos or navigate tighter areas as well as reach new places. All of these new additions blend well with the game while still retaining the original feel of the TH series. The song list is diverse and extensive and can be edited to decide which songs the player wants to hear. With all of these excellent additions, one would think there would be an equal number of drawbacks, however the only real drawbacks deal with camera angles while on foot and the driving missions. The camera problems are few and far between and only apply when the player is on foot but the driving missions generally feel out of place and the vehicles are so simple that driving them is really not much fun. Even compared to many of the newer games, THUG still stands out as one of the best in series possibly only second to THPS3.
