It's been awhile, today's Tomb Raider chapters haven't delivered the adventure we were accustom to in the older days. With the franchise reboot, The Definite Edition is a great ride from start to finish. This is the origin and the beginning of how Lara Croft became the heroine we know her today, every great name has the start.
The game starts off in slower pace, focusing on the group Lara is traveling in search of the lost island of Yamatai, ancient and mystical location of Japanese Sun Queen. The place is believed to hold many treasure and riches, unfortunately due to the ravaging storm the crew ship ends up stuck and destroyed on the island itself.
Originally believed that they are the only ones on the island , the events of the game take darker turns. There are other survivors and they aren't welcoming.
Without spoiling any important story elements, it's sufficient to say many twist and turns are present. Lara gradually becomes tougher and more stronger person, also more merciless and brutal. After all, it takes many measures to survive.
Personally, I enjoyed gradual light RPG elements of the game, from survival skills to weapons upgrades. The game also looks and sounds phenomenal, crisp and clear textures deliver excellent graphics. Lara herself looks phenomenal as well, her equipment realistically uses physics which is a great touch.
The story lasts good 12-15 hours depending on your play style. The only negative aspect of the game would be a tacked - on multiplayer. It feels unfinished, full of glitches and uneven gameplay. The game flow is also not working properly, frame per second drop significantly during the small matches. Overall, even thou the Definite Edition comes with all the DLC for the online component, it still matters little since that part of the game is broken in the first place.
In all honesty, online needed much more time and polish.
The single player is a true gem and worth playing. Lara Croft is back and I hope to see another adventure in the future.
