Titanfall

User Rating: 7 | Titanfall PC

I wanted to add to the reviews out there because they do not mention some very important bits that could influence your decision to buy or not buy Titanfall for the PC. But apparently it needs to be a full fledged review, so I will mention those bits first, and then summarise and complete the review for the rules' sake.

multiplayer?
Whether this game should be called a multiplayer shooter should be up for debate. While running and jumping and diving and kicking through the 15 maps you will eventually find yourself on the wrong end of a bullet leading to the well appreciated kill cam, that, behold, will break any semblance of credibility to the match you were playing. Guess what? Every player is playing their own match. Because what you see on that killcam is definitely not what happened in your game. The culprit is a lag compensation mechanic similar to the ones used in the COD series that gives anyone without the best connection a second or two of extra time to shoot you.

Now in a run, jump and gun type shooter like this, having an extra second will mean the world. While I still do OK merely by stealthing around as much as possible it does make the whole experience feel less sincere and the scoring and ranking become trolling mechanics rather than something to work towards. So be warned! If you have a very good connection be prepared to look for lag simulators to play the game on a somewhat equal level.

match maker
Then there is hardly any review out there mentioning that on PC this game has no server browser! That is right, it lacks one of the most important standard PC game features. Meaning that you are left to their matchmaking system to find you a good match with a good connection which works OK, but more importantly you have no admins that kick cheaters or bad connections, and you have no map rotation control and last but not least no way to shuffle teams so winning teams will stack and losing teams will rotate giving them a very small chance to get a balanced match.

corporate entitlement
Finally they leave out another important bit: the elevated price point. So we all know that it is not exactly packed with content. You're looking at TF2 levels of content when that came out, a $20 game at the time. There will be DLC so we don't know the price of the 'full' game yet, but $60 is very steep and if the reviewers don't weigh that into their scoring (which I can understand because we all have different financial backgrounds) they should at least mention it. And again, they don't.
If you look around hard enough you can find shady shops that offer it for $40. If you're interested in getting this game definitely take the time to shop around for it because like I said $60 is steep and if you get the connection problems it could really disappoint you like it did to me.

so, titanfall
You play on foot or in a mech they call titans. On foot you have double jumps, and wall runs, meaning you can climb fences and buildings easily. The traversal adds some learning curves to the maps. Aside from getting to know the layout you have to learn how to get around but it feels good once you get it right.
You're getting 3 different mechs to pick from that you call in during matches on a timer that you can diminish by shooting people (a fast, medium, and slow mech), 15 maps some of which don't run too well for how they look, customizable pilot and titan loadouts (the tradtitional weapon categories to pick from and a handful of perks), and acquired burn cards which are perks that you can choose to deploy that last for one life.
The flow of the matches is good, they are nice and short. Could have used more modes. There is CTF, TDM, CTP and a Titans only mode. Weapons feel good. It uses magic ammo so reloading is (sadly) not a very conscious event. But most shooters do things that way.

score
I'm giving it a 7 because the multiplayer is good when it decides to work and you let go the idea of a somewhat fair match, and it cannot be that everybody has the connection issues. It's just a shame that this information is left out of reviews that everybody sees, which would have stopped me from buying this game at $40.
