User Rating: 8.8 | Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure GEN
Buster's Hidden Treasure is like a lot of side scrollers of its time. Lots of platforms to jump, lots of enemies to attack, the standard health system, the works. However, it plays very solidly and has a lot of interesting levels to back it up. One special move is the slide, which you can do by running full speed and pressing B. It's not neccessarily needed, but it's great if you're running quickly and see an enemy up ahead. you also have a difficult-to-time wall jump, which is mostly used to get normally inaccessible items like lives. While these extra moves feel pretty standard, but they're also executed well and add to the game while keeping the move-list easy to learn. You'll progress through a world map, a bit like Super Mario World, and like Super Mario World, some levels have secret exits, which lead to alternate levels (though these alternate levels are their own reward and don't provide anything else, save a shortcut). Each area's themes are pretty standard, grass, craves, snow, etc., but the graphics fit the Tiny Toon Adventures theme well. The sound effects are middling, that is, you'll get some cartoonish sound effects, but nothing you wouldn't expect. The music is good, or about as good as most games in the Genesis era. Almost all of it is upbeat, which makes sense given the theme. Unfortunately, like most Genesis games, there is no save feature in the game. The password system used is a little cumbersome, especially since you have to get Game Over in order to access it (which is a pain if you've hoarded up a good number of lives), but at least it's there. Lack of such a feature would have really hurt the game. Buster's Hidden Treasure doesn't re-invent the side-scrolling genre, but it does provide you with a lot of hours of quality gameplay. Konami really did a good job with this game, and used the source material of Tiny Toon Adventures to good effect. If you have a Genesis lying around, look for this.
