It has its shortcomings but the overall package surely makes The Witcher stands as one of the best RPGs ever made.

The Witcher is a game made by CD Projekt, based on a seires of books by the author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The story is about this Witcher named Gerald. A Witcher in short terms, a hunter or strange creatures. Right on the beginning you are rescued and have lost your memory and from the onwards the story goes about a hunt of an organization called Salamandra which you, as Gerald, are after. The plot while at times mundane or boring on a particular chapter in which the game has five is for most of the part great with the ending being nothing short of spectacular and easily one of the best I've seen in the last ten years.

The graphics while old as this game was made in 2007 with an even older engine is still very nice in 2011, with day cycles, beautiful uses of lightning, big field to explore. The sad thing about it is that most of the NPCs look horrible and worse a whole bunch of them look the exact same. For example, every old lady in the game looks exactly the same with maybe just a few color differences in clothing. It can take you away for a bit but I confess it didn't bother me that much.

The music is one of the most beautiful I've heard and while familiar it also somehow feels completely fresh.
Into the mechanics, the combat is kind of hit or miss. If you don't like it at first you won't like it at the end. I personally didn't like nor hated it it was okay but it works and at least is fast so it prevents the combat of becoming boring after a while (I'm looking at you Dragon Age).

To help the combat there's a potion and magic system but they are secondary as the witchers are more of a melee type of warrior so it boils down of how much you want these to take effect in your battles.
For the spells I though Agni, the fire based one, to be amazing is it covers an area and as maxed it does amazing damage. The potions I must confess I didn't use much until near the end but once I did they made a whole difference.

Overall The Witcher is a great game. I believe it took me about 40 to 50 hours to beat it and while not perfect it is still one hell of a game. I'd recommend it to any RPG fan who seeks a great experience and story with much more substance the just flash.
