VERY underrated!

User Rating: 8 | The Technomancer PC

I am really surprised at the official reviews on other sites for this game. I don't understand why it's been looked down on so much.

Sure, the graphics are not photo-realistic, but the faces look great, especially for your player character, and everything runs smoothly even on my below min requirements pc. Combat animations are very fun and smooth also.

I played with a controller, and the combat felt responsive and fun. I feel like the game was meant to be played with a controller the most, as things like the controller vibrating each time you use your technomancy powers make the combat feel a lot more dynamic and cool. So play with a controller on PC if you have one. You can switch between combat styles/weapon sets on the fly and even in the middle of combat, and there is something for every kind of player. You can be sword and shield, a 'rogue' with a pistol, or a staff wielder and change whenever.

The game also offers multiple approaches to quests such as stealth or talking your way out of fights with your charisma or other skills, something not many RPGs offer effectively. You also have a variety of companions you recruit that each offer personal quests and commentary as you do quests. You can develop relationships with your companions, good or bad, and there are even three romance options you can pursue.

As for the story, though I haven't finished it, it's been pretty good so far. Not to spoil anything, but you are a technomancer on Mars after Mars has lost contact with Earth and has been on its own for so long that new civilizations and mutants have taken over the planet. There is a set protagonist, and while not the most expressive of fellows, the voice acting is good throughout the experience.

Edit: After finishing the story I can recommend it to having a great conclusion. It tells you the outcome of your choices throughout the game, making your journey feel more worthwhile and worth another playthrough.

There are multiple areas to explore, and while the maps are a bit confusing to get around at first (especially the city hubs), a dungeon fan would feel right at home in it. The city areas are full and visually distinct, and the art style is unique and pleasant to look at. There are filled with optional side quests, and the game even warns you if you are about to lock out side content by continuing with certain main story missions, which is very nice if you are a completionist.

All in all, I'm seeing a very good RPG here. Sure it's not an AAA RPG that would be polished to the extreme, but that shouldn't be reason for an RPG fan not to check it out.
