It appears a lot of Reviewers don't "get" this game. It's *much* better then they lead you to believe.

User Rating: 8.5 | The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigi no Dungeon PS2
I'll start out by saying that Nightmare of Druaga is a Mystery Dungeon/Roguelike Game. It is a subset of the RPG. When people think RPGs on a console, they think Final Fantasy. However to compare a game like Nightmare of Druaga to Final Fantasy would be incorrect. It is the equivalent of comparing Metal Gear to Gears of War because they both fall under the Action Game umbrella. This seems to be where a lot of reviewers fail. They figure one RPG should be compared to another when this is far from the truth. Nightmare of Druaga is probably one of the best Roguelikes available.

The dungeon and combat mechanics are great as well as adequately challenging. Graphically from a technical standpoint the game looks like early PS2 - Late Dreamcast. However that doesn't matter because artistically the graphics are charming. Each new piece of equipment changes your characters appearance. The more you combine weapons and armor the more you can customize your character to how you see fit. The story is typical RPG fair but one never plays a Roguelike for it's story. Much like one never plays a Mario game for it's story.

In this case if you were looking for an RPG that had a strong multi-faceted plot then yes you would look elsewhere. There is no voice acting and there aren't really any FMV Cutscenes. However those looking for a new (if you haven't played a Roguelike or Mystery Dungeon before) experience, or if you're a veteran seeking a new challenge, you could do far worse then pick up Nightmare of Druaga. Especially when it's only $10 bucks now new in most stores. I strongly recommend giving it a chance. So long as you know that it does not play like your standard JRpg you should be pleasantly surprised.
