A budget title that lacked substance.

User Rating: 4 | The Monkey King: The Legend Begins WII
Knowing that The Monkey King loosely follows the ancient Chinese story Journey to the West and by looking at the cover of the game, you would think that this game is an Action Adventure or even an RPG. If you thought that you would be wrong because this game is a side scrolling shooter.

The Monkey King has this 16-bit-esque graphics, and as a fan of 16-bit shoot-em-ups this game looked good. Also the explosions had a 3D, which adds a great "popping" effect to the game. The soundtrack for this game has this Oriental feel, kinda like the songs you would hear at any Oriental restaurant. The Monkey King is played with the Wii-Mote sideways like the NES controller. The only motion controls for this game happens when you tilt the Wii-Mote to the left to slow down the game play and to the right to speed up the game play. I didn't find the motion controls to be a problem, but if you die (which you shouldn't) you can tilt the Wii-Mote to the right and speed through a good portion of the game.

Just like all shoot-em-ups The Monkey King has power ups/weapon upgrades. Once you get the sixth weapon upgrade you gun will has a spread shot that spreads from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. There is also a secondary weapons and one of the weapons will also shoot top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. You'll be able to get the the sixth weapon upgrade at the beginning of the second level. Once you get the last upgrade you can just button mash and kill enemies just as soon as the show up on the screen and in about 20 minutes you'll beat the whole game. Even those who are unexperienced to the shoot-em-up genre wouldn't find this game to difficult.

I bought this budget title thinking that this game could be a diamond in the ruff, but instead what I found was a game that just simply lacked substance. The game was way to easy, way to short, and the power ups were way to much over powered.
