My Re-Review Of The Gagharv Trilogy

User Rating: 10 | The Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean PSP
Ok, I decided to rewrite my review because there were some things I wanted to change. (My review will mostly be on the entire series)

My Opinion on the series:
This IS the best series for the PSP. NO other RPG comes close to this one as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure someone will agree with me.

My Opinion on LoH III: Song of the Ocean:
This is definitely the best game out of the three, it has the most extras, and also many improvements over the first 2.

My story: First of all, I'm pretty sure you've all figured out that this is my favorite game on the PSP. (Keep in mind I've played TONS of PSP games) This is the first game to actually stick with me. For example, I've played games such as
Untold Legends, (although that was a good game too) and Kingdom of Paradise. I can hardly remember even playing those games. When I think of PSP, the first thing I think of is the Legend of Heroes series.

You may wonder why I think these games are so great. A lot of people say these games stink, or are badly made, or are really boring. I've come to find there is one reason why many people don't give these games the respect they deserve. That reason is:

You have to look past the gameplay.
a.k.a.
-You have to learn to like turn-based combat
-You have to get used to side-scrolling

Once you have gotten over that these games aren't all about fighting monsters, you can start paying attention to the real highlight of the game, the story. Now, some of you may think that's boring, and if that is the case, don't buy this game, buy Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code. I happen to own UL and the LoH series and I've gotten much more fun out of LoH, but that's just me. Anyways, as I was saying, the part of the game you need to focus on to have any fun with the game is the story. The reason the story is so great is because:

a. The characters are well-defined and memorable.
b. Most people can connect with at least one character, even if it is just a side-character.

Now that you know what to look for in this game, (and if you've stuck with it this far), on to my "formal" review.

Overall: 10/10
Everything in this series just hit dead on perfect for me. There were the right plot twists, the right music, the right graphics, and overall a great story. Also,
the games are very replayable.

Graphics: 10/10
The combination of sprites and 3D environments was probably the best perfect combo for this game. The environments are well designed, and the sprites add a touch that couldn't have been achieved with 3D models.

Sound: 10/10
Most of the sound involves the music. Which is actually OK, because this game contains some of the best RPG music I've ever heard. Also, a lot of the spells sound exactly how you'd think they would sound, which is nice.

Gameplay: 10/10
A lot of people say that this is where the game meets its downfall, however, I beg to differ. The turn-based combat worked out fine for me, and I also enjoyed the strategic element that comes with it. For example: A lot of the ingame highways will have similar parties of monsters. It's fairly easy to figure out a string of effective spells and attacks.(especially the spirit spells) Once you've figured out a good strategy, you can use it to gain some serious XP.

Replayability: 10/10
I've played each game at least 5 times over. 'Nuff said.

A note on localization: This is another major gripe. "The translation sucks"
I believe that if you have a thorough English education, most of it is fairly easy to understand, and it was never a big issue for me. However, it could have been improved a lot.

My Gripes: (Yes I do have some)
- Localization, could have done a better job.
- Needs some form of multiplayer
- Needs more mini games/puzzles (Especially in the first two)

This concludes my review. Hope I convince at least one person to buy this series!
