The Last Remnant is designed more towards people looking for a challanging and long lasting RPG.
The story is good but does nothing to try and distance itself from other games. You play as Rush a young man who's sister was kidnapped by a man in white cloak. Rush gets caught in the middle of the battlefeild where two nations are fighting. Because of that Rush meets David Nassau the Marquis of Athlum. He joins forces with Athlum and helps them in there fight. Character wise they do add a uniqueness to the story the coolest charactes are probly Rush, David and Emma.
Gameplay wise the game as good it gives you alot to explore but if your going to play this game for the story alone you will notice two things. 1. its very short and many things will feel left unexplored and 2. the game is going to be very very hard. This fact is mainly due because the game focuses on a vast amount of sidequests and guild tasks, and the game wants you to do those this is why I said that the game caters to RPG vetrans and ones who want a long challenging RPG. being done with the Unreal Engine it offers some really good visuals despite its pixelated loading flaw. Though it has load screens it does give you tips while its loading and sometimes those tips are useful.
The games battle system is unique but at the same time very familiar. Its turn-based but rather than giving your characters the command to attack you command the whole union. So lets say you wanted to have your characters use Mystic Arts you would choose the command "Use Mystic Arts" and they would do so if they had the abiltiy learned. Also the game must give you the option to use the command so if you need to heal and you don't get the option you can't use it this is annoying sometimes but most of the time you have the option when you need it. One thing that I do like about the battle system is while your characters do attack animations. buttons will pop up on the screen in which you press these are known Critical Triggers when sucessfully activated if you have party members who are take ther turn after the enemies it will let them attack before the enemies plus you will do more damage to your opponents. on top of that the you can get into a deadlock in which you and your enemies fight head on. There are flank attacks, interceptions. there is alot to describe but its better to play it for yourself. Despite a couple battle flaws it takes some time to get used to but ends up being fun to go through.
The Last Remnant is a great game that RPG Vetrans and Hardcore RPG gamers are going to get the most out of. if your looking for a game to call yoru First RPG you probly want to look elsewhere but if your a fan of them already I really recommend giving this game a try. 8.5/10
