Strictly multiplayer review

User Rating: 6 | The Last of Us Remastered PS4

This game has some of the best multiplayer action I've played in years hands down. However it also has some brutal and annoying problems as well.

Firstly the gameplay is slow paced and tactical and very tight. There is very little I can say that is negative about the gameplay itself or the mechanics used in multiplayer. If you enjoyed single player, you will most likely enjoy multiplayer. If you wanted a review simply on gameplay, mechanics, or how team oriented and tactical you have to be as a unit I would easily give this game a 9 or 10. Also use a mic, it makes a huge difference for call outs as you can't always mark someone when your sneaking around and see a guy right as he goes behind cover.

But here is also no balance in the matchmaking. It doesn't place you on teams based on what your level is or based on how well you play. I've had numerous games where my team is me a 5, two lvl 0's and one level 1 vs. two 1's, a 5 and a 14 in solo play. I've seen games where the top two scorers from the previous game are paired up the following game on the same team as well.

However, if your unfortunate enough to come across people who go to a corer of the map and simply sit there the whole match picking off anyone who comes close, your going to have a bad time. I've only run into this a handful of times it my 6 hours of playing, but when you do you might as well leave. It takes all the fun and tactical challenge out of the game. It's extremely difficult to push into a long corridor that has a whole team camping it out. But this is simply a minor grievance that rarely occurs and like any multiplayer game that kind of thing will happen.

The bigger problem is with the matchmaking itself as it still hasn't been updated. Finding a game as a solo player is very quick. Takes at most 5 minutes if your unlucky. Usually you'll be thrown right into a game in a minute or two. However if your playing with parties, god help you friend. I'm personally not a fan of interrogation, the game goes by too quickly and your teammates simply execute people on the ground without interrogating them. The games take under 3 minutes from the handful of games I've seen with one sided stomps. But you can find matches in like 8-10 minutes as a party.

Supply raid is where I think the most fun is, the games take a while so you can actually upgrade your weapons and have lots of time to sneak and craft. Once again for a solo player its under 5 minutes to find a match. But as a party of two, even with switching the host during night hours on the weekend, meaning 6pm-10pm, the searching time is roughly 30-50 minutes. Until it's patched your better off either playing solo or not at all honestly. Just because your in a party doesn't mean you will be teamed up either. The game will sometimes throw you in a match with lets say two teams of three when your a team of two and you and your friend are put on opposite teams for the duration.

A lot of these things are really novice mistakes to be left in a "next gen" game. If you read the forums the ps3 version suffered from the same long party matchmaking when it first came out as well. So apparently they didn't remaster the patch to fix that for the launch.

Naughty Dog have announced they know of the long queue times and are releasing a patch to fix it but that was five days ago so no rush.

Once the matchmaking queue times are fixed i would give this game a 7.5 or 8. While it fixes the most glaring problem if you want to play with a friend, the fact that a lot of the games feel like one sided beat downs because of a lack of player skill balance leaves you with a salty taste in your mouth.
