Too heavily inspired by Resident Evil

User Rating: 6 | The Evil Within XONE

Coming from the creator of Resident Evil, You can expect a very similar styled experience with Evil Within. The gameplay is similar, The graphics are similar. Pretty much the entire game comes off as a spin-off of RE without really being its own original thing.

The gameplay reminds me a lot of RE but is it a bit more fluid as you can walk around while shooting, You can sprint and things of that nature yet it's still very much the same in that way. You can upgrade things such as your stamina, health and ammo capacity too. The one huge plus for me is that it's a lot easier to swap out weapons and equipment.

The story doesn't really interest me that much. It's not that it's hard to follow, It just isn't all that interesting. The story takes quite a while to really get going and even then it doesn't really take off. Some of the bosses are genuinely fun to face and can be quite a challenge. The main boss, however, is quite the disappointment and nowhere near as scary as the developer tried to make him out to be.

A big disappointment for me would be the visuals of this game. Everything is so dark and kind of bland looking. I don't view this as a visual style, I view it more as a cover-up for any possible poor looking graphics or bugs. The environments lack variety and become boring to look at after a while too. I am also disappointed with the lack of originality. It's too much like Resident Evil without being its own thing.

Overall: 6/10
Evil Within can be fun at times but it's neither a unique or original horror experience. There's too much Resident Evil influence without it being its own thing.
