If you are a fan (as I am) of classic point-click-adventures then this is not a game you'll want to miss...

I like Daedalic Entertainment as a game developer. I think they're on top of their game, bringing us "above average to good" oldschool point-n-click adventures in a new and aesthetically pleasing way. Sadly, it's something that's pretty rare these days. Everything has to be flashy fps console ports or there's hardly any prospect for game developers of making a buck. But that rant is not what I want to fill this review with. :)

I've played "The whispered world" by the same studio and really enjoyed that, so I was interested when I learned about this game. I'm glad to say I was not dissapointed at all. This game has an entirely different setting but the feel to it is very similar. The artwork is awesome, it's one of the major aspects that make it appealing to me. The voice acting is not top notch but it's certainly not bad either, it didn't distract or bother me at all. The storyline is engaging and original. The game mechanics involving movement and object combining/interaction are simple and effective.

The only negative points to this game, contrary to "The whispered world" I might add, is the difficulty and the ending.

[NO SPOILERS]
The difficulty is just a tad bit too easy (only just!). No adventure game is complete without having a few moments where you are completely stuck and that walkthrough becomes so very seductive that you have to take a cold shower to avoid taking the easy route. I did not experience this with this game. I got "stuck" a few times (2 or 3 times) but always managed to get going again fairly quickly.

Another letdown is the ending (which is why I put the "no spoilers" mark there). Now, the game would have definately gained points from having a few different ending options. After finishing it I was suprised to read that there was only one ending. The end REALLY lends itself to having different options to choose from but there just aren't any. I'm fine with the ending that Daedalic chose, bitter-sweet as it may be, but you should expect to see the ending credits no later than a minute or two after making your final mouseclick. That is NOT how you end a 10-20hrs journey!! The ending is one of the most important things, if not THE most important. I would have thought that was pretty basic knowledge for any game developer. Cutting corners there and skipping to the credits without properly "wrapping things up" leaves a bad taste in the mouth of any gamer. (reference the Mass Effect 3 debacle)

All in all, I would recommend this game. IF you fit the right profile. You will enjoy this game if you are:
a bit older, witnessed and enjoyed the adventure games of yore, don't mind utilizing your brain when playing video games and appreciate high quality painted art backgrounds.
