There's not much to this average rpg, perhaps the only saving grace would be the endless sarcasm and snide remarks.

User Rating: 6.2 | The Bard's Tale PS2
This game starts out on a strong footing, telling a story of a travelling bard with severe morality problems. Throughout the game, the dirty humor and vulgar remarks never really get old. To an extent it actually keeps you going.

As far as game play, sad to say this is one of the lower points of the game. Though it is competent, it's made needlessly hard by the awkward control scheme and somewhat cheesy familiar system. Something as simple as healing requires you to press a button to activate a menu, press another button to select the heal spell, and once again press another button to choose a rank for that heal spell. Suffice to say, very needlessly complicated. Most "spells" require a similar method of conjury, after so many hours, it becomes very frustrating.

The graphics are pretty sub par, with somewhat generic looking monsters, and a few drab backdrops. Actually thinking on retro spec, a vast majority of this game felt generic. The best looking things in the game turns out to be a couple of the character models and some decent bosses.

The sound department was somewhat lacking as well, you would think a game based on a musician would be somewhat more musical. Though the songs that are there, (which ironically enough are...lyical songs) are downright hilarious. But the lack of background music and the generic grunts and usual hack and slash noises make the repetition of this game that much worse.

All in all, the best part of this game is the humor. The perverted wise-cracking main character is perhaps the saving grace of this game, making it pretty interesting in the long run. I'd recommend renting before buying.
