A step in the right direction

User Rating: 7 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2 PS3

Amazing Spider Man 2 has officially surpassed Spider-Man 2 now. So for any naysayers who still think Spider-Man 2 is better than this game, when all it had going for it was the webbing mechanic, needs to take off their nostalgia glasses. ASM2 brought back swinging in the city and it is truly amazing and feels fluid. The boss fights are the best I have seen since Shattered Dimensions. The upgrade mechanic is simple and streamlined and its cool that the different outfits have different stats and upgrade individually. The combat is fun and fast paced, though can be wonky at times cause there is no auto target for the most part. And the best part of the game is it has good replayability if you don't mind the next part I am going to get into.

Now there are a few bad things in this game that needs to be worked on still. Repetitiveness, is this games downfall. All the side missions are the same and just re-spawn again throughout the game, though they are quite varied in terms of what to do. But there are only about 3-5 different types (for a single side mission, example saving a citizen or car chase) I have seen so far for the same objective. The worst part about the side missions is the fact that they take you out of the gameplay every time to show you a dumb news video saying what you did. Which in turn makes doing the side missions not as fun as it would be if you can just do it and keep going to the next thing. Which leads me to the next negative thing about the game. The hero and menace system, the concept is great but the execution is terrible. Having the news reporter interrupt gameplay to say the same thing over and over again for every side mission you do is distracting. If Beenox could have just had it as a audio recording it would have been better. Being a Hero gives your outfits a bonus to its stats and being a menace reduces stats and also causes the police (task force for hunting cross species) to be aware of you and may attack you, which is cool. And that goes back to doing side missions to keep the hero meter up.

My least favorite thing about this game is the voice acting, the TMNT actor is just not Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I still think the best voice actors that did Spider Man is Josh Keaton and Christopher Daniel Barnes, Beenox bring any of those 2 back. The voice acting is repetitive and dull, this voice actor just doesn't deliver the sarcastic humor Spider-Man is known for. A small gripe I have is that Beenox over animated Spider-Man in the cut scenes several times. Though overall I think this is the best Spider Man game to date, but doesn't compare to other quality games. It is still sub-par and awaiting a developer who can take it to the heights of the Batman games or even surpass them.

Want to add from further play through after the game. Screw the side missions having the meter full to menace and having the Task Force attack you is a hell a lot better than doing the side missions for fun.
