what's not to like about tetris ds? aside from the nostalgic nintendo backgrounds and the standard (classic) tetris game itself, there are also several new modes of play (mission, push, touch, catch and puzzle) in varying degrees of difficulty. there are also competitive multiplayer versions of the standard, push and mission modes. and in true nintendo fashion, there's an option to add items into play.

the push mode is particularly entertaining. you play against the game or a multiplayer opponent, and start with a 1x1 block in your area at the top screen. this is the anchor upon which you need to form a base using tetriminoes (those floating shapes that make the game possible). whenever you clear two or more lines, your base pile moves down, and pushes your opponent's side up (this is shown upside down at the bottom screen). basically the goal is to push your base pile so far down that your opponent's base pile is pushed up past the danger line near the end of his area.

i personally enjoy playing the standard and push modes alone or with friends. we've gone up to four players simultaneously on standard mode and it's really fun. each player can set a personal handicap (how slow or fast the tetriminoes fall), which is handy for me since i need to set mine higher than the people i play with -- honestly, i play worse when the tetriminoes fall slower because i second guess myself incessantly. and the items do add an element of surprise to the overall game play. it's especially entertaining the first few rounds you use the items because you have no idea what each item is going to do to affect the game.

my fiance and i have played the multiplayer push mode once or twice. it's competitive enough when you're playing against the game, so with a human opponent sitting next to you it's almost unbearable! haha. it really almost feels like your physically pushing each other at points. it's a great way to practice quick thinking and problem solving under time pressure.

this game nets a 9.5/10. almost perfect! i just really miss the old tetris music. i used to play tetris on the NES all the time and without the old background music it just feels a little incomplete.
