OVERVIEW

Turtles 3, in my opinion, is the best game in the series on the NES. Turtles 3 uses a lot of the good things from Turtles 2 but also incorporates a bunch of new things to make this game much more fun. Anyways, the game starts off with Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello on vacation in Key West, Florida. Our four ninja heroes are taking part in a little rest and relaxation ever since they defeated the Shredder in the second game. Everything was going well until one day, when they were watching April's news program, the Shredder interrupts the broadcast and directs a message towards the turtles. Then they witness Manhattan getting lifted up into the air along with its entire population (which includes April). Now our ninja turtles have to once again stop the Shredder and save Manhattan!

GAMEPLAY

Gameplay wise, Turtles 3 offers the same exciting beat'em up style. The level design has been revamped and proves to be better than ever. You'll get to kick butt on the sandy beaches of Florida, a submarine, and even on a surf board riding the waves. The exciting levels are probably the best part about this game. The multiplayer aspect lets you and a friend defeat the Foot Clan together. Whether you're playing by yourself or not you're bound to have plenty of fun.

Just like before each level contains multiple Foot Soldiers and other monsters to fight along with some minor platforming elements. You'll find that there is a little more interaction with the environment this time around. At the end of each level you'll square off against one of Shredder's henchmen. The boss battles are really challenging and you may find that they can be a little unfair.

The controls are just as solid as last time. Maneuvering and fighting with your character is a breeze and doesn't hinder the gameplay at all. Each turtle has the same basic attacks and jumping attacks but now they have the option to unleash a unique special move. These special moves are extremely powerful but will cost you one life point. Leonardo has the spin attack which is great for crowd control, Raphael has a very strong torpedo-like attack, Michelangelo's jumping back kick is always lethal and Donatello's rolling strike will knock down any foe. These new abilities are exactly what the gameplay needed in order to keep the fighting from getting too repetitive.

GRAPHICS & SOUND

The visuals are top notch in Turtles 3. The color and clarity of the levels and characters work nicely together.

The music is fun and up-beat; a great combo for any beat'em up type game. The sound effects work well and greatly enhance the satisfaction of destroying your enemies.

CONCLUSION

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is one of the best beat'em up games for the NES. I would highly recommend this game to anyone and especially to ninja turtle fans. Turtles 3 combined with some greasy pizza will surely have you yelling "Cowabunga!"
