Solid beat-um-up with a heavy story element and plenty of gore. I just wish it had lasted a bit longer.

The beat-em-up genre has seen better days but this title will pull on your heart strings if you remember the good old days when the basics were good enough. Some bad guys to kill with a giant sword and a healthy amount of gore along with a strong but brief story and excellent graphics make this one of the underrated gems on the Dreamcast. Unfortunately this game falls short of being a masterpiece. It is very short in length offering only mild incentive for multiple play-throughs and some of the more interesting and complex combat mechanics are underutilized.

The graphics are incredible and have a distinctive anime style. The environments are mostly dark and dingy with a mono-colored vibe that adds to the gloomy tone of the game yet somehow the game still manages to be quite colorful and vibrant especially when you are hacking away at hordes of enemies.

The sound is also a high point of this game as all the script is backed by a voice cast and the music is befitting of a medieval themed hack n' slash.

The gameplay is your basic beat-um-up style that you might expect on a 3D plane. One of the most irritating aspects of this game is the fact that when you slash your sword at a wall or in a narrow hallway you get stuck in an animation indicating that your sword can't pass through solid objects. This is a horrible design flaw that I suppose was implemented for realism. In these section I presume you are meant to use your fists and other projectile weapons but they aren't nearly as powerful as your sword and berserker rage.

In conclusion I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys basic action titles with lots of blood and a solid story component.
