'Almost, but not quite' sums this game very well.

User Rating: 7 | Supreme Commander 2 PC
Supreme Commander is an original and promising franchise based on a Chris Taylor's 1997 hit Total Annihilation. The old game was praised for it's smooth gameplay, advanced physics and originality, and it has won many awards and still boasts a respectable fan base more than 10 years after it's release.

Supreme Commander 2, on the other hand suffers from many of the quirks of modern PC games, namely from the process of consolization and streamlining.

Chris Taylor and his team did a relatively good job of making a fun and tactical strategy game, but I can't escape the feeling that this is yet the worst iteration of said franchise.

Compared to the previous Supreme Commander, the latest addition is inferior in every way. Supreme Commander 2 is overall less complex, features an unimaginative, confusing and boring campaign and less diversity among the races. The maps are smaller and the tone of the game is scaled down, which is very bad for a game that used to boast about it's massive scale and dynamic gameplay.

Supreme Commander 2, unlike it's predecessor, is not a technical powerhouse. Smaller scale and not so impressive graphics took it's toll on SupCom 2 and I was left wondering if streamlining this game for consoles no-matter-what was such a good idea.

SupCom2 economy also got beaten down and as of now (with the inclusion of DLC) resembles a combination of the old economy and an economy of streamlined strategy games (pretty much every other strategy game). In my opinion, abandoning a unique economy system that worked well, for a system that every other strategy game uses is a bad idea. Don't fix what's not broken next time, ok ?

It should be quite obvious by now that if you are a campaign player you should not buy this game. The campaign is lackluster, not emotionally engaging and not fun. I know that writing on the case says otherwise. :) The campaign can't be emotionally engaging if you don't care about the characters, and you won't care about the characters when there is no character development. It's simple as that. There are some loosely tied, badly briefed missions and some funny war that nobody really knows why it started.

There are good points to this game though. The battles are still large and dynamic, just not as large and dynamic as they used to be. Skirmish games are fun and internet matches are still good.

DLC brought some nice improvements, and in the case of SupCom 2 it really did bring improvements and not just bunch of crappy content. The economy took a swing to the old times, new regular and experimental units are introduced adding to the diversity of the races, new maps are also introduced and the artificial intelligence got improved.

I think that new ai is worth mentioning at least twice because it greatly improves the behavior of computer led opponents and by extension improves skirmish games a lot. This is one of the best (if not the best) ais I saw in strategy games ever and really pulls Supreme Commander 2 out of the mud, making out of this mediocre game a good game when all is considered.
