The Best Fighting Game On The Wii Virtual Console So Far!

User Rating: 9 | Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers SNES
I never had the chance to play much of this game as a child and I had 1300 Wii Points left and I thought I'd give it a shot. SSFII: TNC takes what was great with SFII and builds on it, adding a few major and a few minor adjustments. Much more the SFII: Turbo did. The most noticeable addition is the inclusion of 4 new fighters. Those fighters include Cammy, the British Military Agent, Dee Jay, a Jamaican Boxer, Fei Long, an Asian Fighter, and even a Native American, T. Hawk. All the characters including the new additions add up to 16.

Menus/Presentation:

The modes include the all new Group Mode, Tournament Mode, Time Mode, and the basic Super Battle and Versus Battle. You can choose from 8 different modes of challenge when fighting the CPU. And when you finish the Super Battle, it automatically pushes the challenge level up one which is a very nice feature. You can also change the damage handicap when playing against a human and/or in Tournament Mode. A feature that I enjoy a lot is that the game tracks in Versus Mode what player won/lost and with what character. This tracker can also be reset at anytime. Lastly, the opening is fantastic with Ryu creating his famous Hadoken and aiming it right at the screen.

Visuals:

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers has the nicest SF visuals on the SNES. With sharper character models, new animations (for the fighters, and background), and all around smoother movement. The menus are clean, and when selecting your character, the models are very nicely drawn and you can easily see who they are. There are also many new color palette choices for each character, 16 to be exact. There is one stage to every character (including the new ones) and each are fantastically designed.

Sound:

The sound effects are somewhat basic and the only new ones are for the new characters. The sound effects overall are just plain okay. Although it is incredibly satisfying to hear your opponents yell when they are defeated. The music is some of the best in the series especially the Bonus Round song and the announcer sounds great (for the names that he does announce).

Gameplay/Controls:

As fans of the Street Fighter Series should know, the game is all about chains, combos, and special moves. Thanks to the Wii Menu, you can go to the Operations Manual and see any player's special attacks at anytime. They are very easy to follow and to preform except for Sagat's, and Bisons's special moves where you have to hold a direction button on the pad for a certain amount of time. The game is best played with the Classic Controller, using the D-Pad. You are also able to change your Low, Medium, and High Kicks/Punches to any attack button on the controller. The game's basic speed has been slowed down a bit but thankfully you are able to increase it. There are 5 different speed levels in all and you are able to change them at the menu. The characters have been balanced, although there are some obvious exceptions to the bosses.

Replay Value:

I've only had this game for a few days, and I'm completely addicted to it. Being it my only Virtual Console game, it is hard to compare with others, but I believe I will be playing it for a long, long time. I've played a few tournaments with a couple of friends and we enjoyed ourselves so much, we couldn't stop. We spent several ours perfecting our skills and we could keep doing so for who knows how long. I've spent most of my time perfecting Ryu, E. Honda, and Sagat, but I'm aiming to be a somewhat of a master in all of the characters. This is a game that is sure to stay on the first page of my Wii Channels for a long, long time.
