User Rating: 8.5 | Super Monkey Ball Deluxe PS2
After two titles got their way onto the Gamecube, Sega finally made the right decision for a change. They collected the SMB games together, gave them some new party games, and sent the title over to the PS2 and XBox. What came out of the port was just as lovable as the original, and even kept its multiplayer zing. The only downside is that the wait may make this game seem like it was released past its period of true worth. Gameplay: A nice set of controls and a box of minigames keep this game delicious, if not fresh, as ever. The levels are great as always, and the characters stick well. Sadly enough, some of the levels, beautiful as they were, felt more like a chore than a fun time to complete. Having them at hand for multiplayer makes it worth it though. Graphics: Though the graphics may not have translated perfectly from the cube counterparts, they are still quite good. There are only a few minor graphic letdowns, but those volcano pits sure look pretty. Did I mention that this game is available in widescreen? Sound: Though the monkeys' voices suffer from Klonoa Syndrome (also known as Banjo-Kazooie Disorder), they are still lovable. All of the necessary pops and squeeks are there, so even if this game isn't quite a platformer, it really feels like it. Value: A lasting single-player mode will bring numerous levels to unlock and come back to, but the game is more enjoyable with up to 3 other players. Bring this out at a party; no one will speak out against the monkey-launching madness. Conclusion: Good party game, good time-killer, and it certainly runs well as a game where you don't have to shoot or cut up things.
