Nostalgia Done Right

User Rating: 9 | Super Mario RPG NS
Back in the late 90’s, I was still pretty young and always thought I wasn’t very good at videogames. My brother rented Super Mario RPG from the video store and that was my first exposure to it. After that, I learned about RPGs and became a huge fan. Mario RPG’s remake is definitely easy, but it’s fun and has all the charm you would expect. I remember thinking I wasn’t very good at videogames until I played this one on the SNES. After that I discovered the Final Fantasy series and played those. That developed my ability to figure out games. From there I learned how to play games well and eventually stopped thinking I wasn’t very good at them. Mario RPG’s remake took me back to those days and I breezed through it in a week, even with my now limited time to play games. Having just finished a playthrough of Elden Ring when I started Mario RPG, it was a dynamic shift of how much in life has changed and it was interesting to see. The game itself is non-stop fun and charm in every sense. I love turn based RPGs because of this game and I was glad to see it held up so well. The updated graphics are impressive on the handheld console, especially on a large TV. My only gripe with the game overall is that there are frame dips when walking around, but combat seems fine. Timing can be tricky at times, but I eventually figured it out on all the moves. I want to say thank you to Nintendo for remaking this classic and taking me back to a time before responsibilities overrode everything else and bringing the classic Mario charm back to me.
