A very revolutionary game and a simple but very fun game in one package.

User Rating: 9.5 | Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt NES
In 1985, Nintendo released the game Super Mario Bros. it was considered by many to be a great game, and was a very revolutionary game at the time. Since then, the game has had many re-releases, even during the NES' lifetime, through various compilation cartridges such as the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge.

Super Mario Bros. was a very revolutionary game for its time. Before it was released, many games only had a single screen per level. There were a few side-scrolling games before Super Mario Bros. came out, but none were as well established, or were as well made as Super Mario Bros. was.

The gameplay is very simple. It has you controlling Mario trying to get from one side of the stage to the other within a certain amount of time. But it isn't as easy as it sound. Each level has many obstacles you have to get past in order to get to the end of the level, including enemies, bottomless pits, and other kinds of obstacles. The level design in the game is very well done, and tests the gamer's abilities. There are items in the game which help you out within the levels. There are super mushrooms, which makes you bigger and lets you break blocks that you couldn't break before, which sometimes allows you to access areas of the level that you couldn't access before. There is a fire flower, which lets you shoot fireballs to kill enemies. And finally there is a powerup called Starman, which makes you invincible for a short amount of time. In addition to this, there are some enemies which have shells, and you can jump on these enemies and use their shells to kill other enemies.

The graphics in this game, while severely outdated in today's standards, were a huge leap forward by the standards of the time it was originally released. The details on Mario, and everything else in the game, were unlike anything that was seen before in videogames.

The game have a few different sound effects which mainly used small effects, such as a "boing" sound when Mario is jumping which are extremely dated by today's standards, but were well done for the time. In addition to this, the game had about 4 different songs which are used throughout the game, and which are all used within differently themed areas. These songs were great, and have become series staples due to the fact that many of the sequels have had updated versions of them.

Super Mario Bros. is a game that redefined gaming when it needed to be redefined, and it's no wonder why it had so many sequels and spinoffs, and why it was re-released so many times. In addition to Super Mario Bros., this cartridge includes the game Duck Hunt. Duck Hunt is a simple game that was created to take advantage of the NES Light Gun. It revolved around the player using the Light Gun to aim at different ducks that fly around the screen before they fly off. There are only 3 bullets per group of duck, which increases the difficulty. As the game goes on, the ducks move faster and it becomes a lot harder. It's a very simple idea and a very fun game to play.

The graphics in the game a great for the time, due to the simplistic nature of the game. The sound effects are pretty good, and the music is good, although there aren't that many of them, and the sound effect for the dog laughing can get really annoying.

This cartridge was a great deal when it came out, and is still worth checking out (although you'd need the Light Gun for Duck Hunt). Super Mario Bros. is a great platforming game, and Duck Hunt is a great game which you can play whenever you want a change of pace from Super Mario Bros. This cartridge is a great one to have in your NES collection, with 2 classics for the price of 1.
