One of 2006's biggest sleeper hits!

User Rating: 8.9 | Summon Night: Craft Sword Monogatari GBA
Gameplay: Summon Night is an RPG that uses a real-time combat system similar to games like Tales of Phantasia. You'll spend the majority of the game either reading dialogue or traversing through floor after floor of dungeons. The random encounter rate is pretty high in this game (higher than most other RPGs), but the battles are quick, so the encounter rate too high to the point of frustration. The combat itself is fun, enjoyable, and fast-paced, and while it isn't especially "deep", it's still great.

The storyline itself is fantastic. You don't really expect there to be a story that's this good based on how short the game in, but Summon Night manages to deliver a storyline that's very good! The characters are also very likeable and the twists are awesome and unexpected.

Graphics: Summon Night's visuals are pretty good. They're not the best that we've seen on the GBA, sure, but considering that this game was originally released in Japan a couple of years ago, the graphics were good for it's time period. There is never any slowdown, and the characters all look unique and interesting.

Sound: The music in Summon Night is awesome! This is the type of game that you wish had a Sound Room, because you'll constantly get the game's soundtrack stuck in your head. Everything from the battle music to the boss music is unique and nicely done. It's hard to imagine a better soundtrack that could have gone with this game.

Value: Summon Night is a fairly short game, especially by RPG standards. It took me 11 and a half hours to make it to the end, which isn't very long. Still, there's plenty to do after you've beaten the game, and completionists will be overjoyed at the amount of side-quests and places that open up once you've beaten the final boss. While there's 11 and a half hours of storyline, it's easy to double that number if you're looking to experience everything that the game has to offer.

Overall, Summon Night was one of 2006's biggest sleeper hits. I really didn't know what to expect walking into this game. Summon Night ended up being far better than I could have ever imagined. Whether you're looking for a fun RPG or a great storyline, I strongly recommend Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, and I personally can't wait to play the sequal.
