The first "cute'em up" for the NES

User Rating: 5.8 | Stinger NES
Are you the type of person who is frustrated by daily life and feels the need to take it out on coat hangers, tacos, and watermelons? Do you like to collect bells and save the world? Then by gum this game is for you!

Stinger was one of Konami's trademark simultaneous 2-player games for the NES. This particular one was a shoot'em up featuring rocketships with boxing gloves and enemies that resembled coat hangers and bosses that looked like tacos. Over time these types of shooters have been referred to as "cute'em ups" due to the ridiculously cute characters and enemies that inhabit them. Graphically the game is pretty enjoyable, the bosses are big, the enemy models are plentiful and everything is bright and colorful. The gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. Aside from the look, nothing real stands out in the game. It's a little easier than a lot of other shooter that appeared on the NES like Gradius. 2 player mode is fun, but the level ups don't really make anything feel special. I guess if your idea of trash-talking giant watermelons is your idea of a good time, then maybe this game is for you.

Overall I don't really give this game a strong recommendation. Cute'em ups are fun, but there are better ones than this. After the amusement of the enemies wears off, there's just not enough gameplay here to keep you around. Try it, but don't buy it.
