What a waste of real licensed tracks. Maybe put some effort into it next time, Jaleco.

User Rating: 1.1 | Stepping Selection PS2
As a dance game player, and music lover, this game really fails on both counts.

Stepping Selection, or Stepping Stage, is a game in the vein of Dance Dance Revolution and Pump It Up in which there is a dance pad that you use to press on the spots on the pad as they appear on the screen. As opposed to the 4 panel DDR pad, or 5 panel PIU pad, this pad has 6 panels. A blue, red, and yellow on the right and the left. Immediately, this setup is problematic, as movement on the pad feels forced and not instinctive, as opposed to the well choreographed steps of Dance Dance and Pump It Up. And of course, what fun is a dance game on the controller?

The game's steps, besides just having a problematic, uninviting, and just plain bad setup, are not on beat. So if you actually find a way to enjoy the awful setup, what you're left to play with are steps that don't even correspond to the beats of the songs, making the game nearly unplayable.

And if that weren't enough, unless you're in elementary school, you probably won't like any of the pop tracks on this game's soundtrack. And let's face it, the game doesn't do a very good job of reproducing CD quality tracks anyway, which shouldn't be a problem on a Playstation 2 game, but for some reason this game just cannot get it right. To it's credit, however, most of the once-popular tracks in this game are the real licensed tracks, so if you are a fan of the music, you won't have to settle for crappy covers done by underpaid Japanese vocalists or awful techno remixes done by jobless DJs.

Last, and least, are the graphics. The brightly colored feet shaped step identifications scroll upward in the manner you've come to expect in a dance game, so no treats here. However, the slapdash job of placing full motion music videos in some of the songs is absolutely horrific. The videos are pixelated and look like garbage, which they shouldn't on the Playstation 2, but do.

Don't even bother with this game. There's just not a reason in the world to do so. Even if you like to play awful games, this one is too far gone, and too difficult to obtain, to recommend for some cheap laughs.
